What is an electric bike and why switch to an electric bike ?

An electrically assisted bicycle (EAB) is a cycle equipped with an integrated motor that automatically activates when you start pedaling. This motor, located in the wheel or crankset, adapts its assistance to your cadence and the effort you provide. It does not replace your pedaling but reinforces it, providing a feeling of fluidity, controlled power, and comfort. The system is powered by a lithium-ion battery, usually removable, whose capacity directly affects the range: from 50 to 150 km depending on the model, the level of assistance used, the weight carried, and the elevation of the route.

L'maintenance of an electric bike is relatively simple but requires regular vigilance: checking the electrical system, updating the software for certain connected models, lubricating the chain, checking the brakes and tire pressure. The battery, which has an average lifespan of 800 to 1000 charge cycles, represents one of the main costs to be expected when replacing it, with a price varying between 400 and 800 euros.

Despite being heavier than a conventional bicycle, e-bikes are ideal for reducing distances, tackling hills without exhaustion, and replacing daily car use. Their only real drawback remains their initial purchase price, which can be prohibitive without financial assistance. But the riding experience they offer, incomparable to that of shared bikes such as Vélib or low-cost urban e-bikes, often justifies the investment.

How to choose the right electric bike ?

Choosing an electric bike is not something you do on a whim. It is a process that deserves some thought, because the right model is the one that fits your daily life, your desires, your constraints. The objective is simple: find the bike that will make you love every journey. To achieve this, several essential criteria must be taken into account, and we will detail them with concrete examples from our in-store experience.

Gravel électrique, un vélo pour toutes les situations

1. Define its use

  • Urban: If you mostly ride in the city, whether commuting to work or running errands, a compact bike is ideal. Folding bikes are popular for their ease of storage, especially in small apartments or on public transport.

  • Trekking / road: for Sunday strolls or regular journeys on roads and paths, it is better to opt for a comfortable and durable e-bike. Haibike Adventr, with its 700 Wh battery, offers up to 120 km of autonomy and a comfortable seat thanks to its wide saddle and ergonomic handles.

  • Mountain biking: fans of sporty outings in the mountains or forests will appreciate electric mountain bikes, equipped with knobby tires, adapted suspensions and a powerful central motor to tackle rough terrain.Mondraker chaser is a very good choice.

  • Speedbike: If you're looking for pure speed for long journeys, speedbikes can reach 45 km/h. Note: models speedelecs are considered mopeds and require registration, insurance and the wearing of an approved helmet.

2. Choose the right engine

  • Front wheel: This configuration is the simplest and often the least expensive. It is suitable for flat and urban routes, but can give a slightly artificial pulling sensation. It is found, for example, on certain entry-level bikes intended for occasional use.

  • Rear wheel: theassistance is more natural, because it accompanies the movement of the drive wheel. It is a good compromise for journeys mixing town and country, with moderate gradients.

  • Mid-drive motor: positioned in the center of the bike, it offers excellent balance and even weight distribution. It analyzes your cadence and effort to adjust theassistance with precision. This type of engine, present on the models Bosch Or Shimano, is recommended for regular or even intensive use.

3. Autonomy & battery

L'battery life is a key question when choosing an electric bike. It depends on the battery capacity, expressed in Wh (watt-hours), but also on your weight, the level of assistance used, the terrain, and the weather conditions. A 400 Wh battery generally allows you to travel between 50 and 80 kilometers. If you're riding on hilly terrain, plan for a 500 Wh or larger battery to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Let's take the example of theGranville E Urban : Equipped with a 500 Wh battery, it can reach up to 120 km of autonomy in eco mode. For daily commutes, a removable battery is a real plus: you can recharge it at home or in the office, which greatly facilitates daily use if you don't have a socket near your parking space.

Some batteries are invisibly integrated into the frame, while others are attached to the luggage rack: it's all a question of design and practicality. A battery recharges in 3 to 6 hours depending on its capacity and the type of charger used.

4. Weight and comfort

THE weight of an electric bike varies between 20 and 28 kg, mainly due to the battery and the motor. This weight is not an obstacle in itself, as the assistance largely erases the feeling of effort. However, it is important to consider if you have to carry your bike, take it up stairs or transport it in a vehicle.

Comfort is paramount, especially if you plan to ride regularly or over long distances. suspension fork absorbs shocks from road irregularities, just as a suspension seatpost can improve back comfort. Ergonomic grips, a wide, well-padded saddle, and a frame that fits your body shape make a real difference in everyday riding. This is what separates a good bike from a great e-bike: the ride quality and the enjoyment you feel.

What assistance is available for purchasing an electric bike ?

THE purchase price of an electric bike can be a barrier for some households. This is why several financial aid schemes have been put in place to support the transition to more sustainable mobility. There are two main categories of aid: national aid and local aid, which can often be combined.

National bonus of up to €400

The State offered aid of up to 400 euros for the purchase of a new electric bike, until February 15, 2025. This subsidy, called "bike bonus", is subject to several conditions: you must be of legal age, domiciled in France, not have been taxed above a certain ceiling the previous year, and the bike must meet European standards (CE approval). The procedures are carried out online, on the official portal of the Agence de Services et de Paiement (asp-public.fr), within six months of purchase. You will need to provide an invoice, a sworn statement and proof of income.

Local aid: up to €500 extra

In addition, there may be assistance from your local authority (town hall, metropolitan area, or region). Some municipalities offer up to €500 for the purchase of an electric bike, or even more for cargo or adapted bikes. For example, the city of Paris grants up to €400 for a classic e-bike and €600 for a cargo model. These grants are sometimes accessible to everyone, regardless of income, or subject to social or geographical criteria. Inquire directly at your town hall or on your regional website.

What budget for a good electric bike ?

Vélo électrique de villeThe price of an electric bike varies considerably depending on the model, features, and brand. To make the right investment, it's essential to understand what each price range offers in terms of quality, comfort, and performance.

Below €1000, there are entry-level models, often from little-known brands or large retailers. These bikes may be suitable for very occasional use on flat terrain, but they generally have limited autonomy, basic components and reduced comfort. They are often heavier bikes with low-power motors, sometimes positioned in the front wheel, which gives a less natural riding feel.

We do not recommend this range of VAE.

Between 1000 and 1500 €, we are entering a more serious range. At this price, you can find a reliable urban e-bike, equipped with a central or rear wheel motor of good quality, with a battery of around 400 to 500 Wh. This is the ideal price range for daily use in the city or for short peri-urban distances. Brands like Winora offer solid models in this range.

Buy an electric bike for less than €1,500

Between 1500 and 3000 €, you have access to high-quality electric bikes, often equipped with motors Bosch Or Shimano. The range is comfortable, the finishes are better, and the ride comfort is really there. This is the range where you'll find the majority of high-performance touring, trekking, and hardtail mountain bikes. It's also the right budget for people looking for a truly durable, repairable, and upgradeable bike.

Buy an electric bike between €1,500 and €3,000

Beyond €3,000, we enter the high-end sector, with bikes designed for intensive or specific use: full-suspension mountain bikes, cargo bikes, speedbikes, or ultra-light models with carbon frames. These e-bikes are often chosen by demanding cyclists or professionals who want to replace a car on a daily basis, over long distances or for transporting loads.

Autonomy, maintenance, lifespan: what you need to know

L'autonomy of an electric bike is often the first question users ask. In reality, it depends on many factors: the battery capacity of course (expressed in Wh), but also the rider's weight, the type of route, the frequency of stops, the level of assistance used, and even the wind or outside temperature. On average, a well-balanced e-bike can travel between 60 and 120 km on a full charge. Some high-end models, equipped with batteries of 700 Wh or more, can even reach up to 160 km.

Batterie de la marque Bosh pour vélo électrique

There battery is a key element, not only for the autonomy but also for the longevity of the bike. It generally offers between 800 and 1000 charge cycles, the equivalent of 4 to 6 years of intensive use. When the capacity decreases, it is possible to replace it: depending on the brand and technology, expect to pay between €400 and €800 for a new battery. To extend its lifespan, it is advisable to never completely drain it, to avoid storing it in direct sunlight or in a humid environment, and to recharge it at least once a month if the bike is not in use.

L'maintenance of an electric bike does not differ much from a conventional bicycle, except that you also need to check the electronic part: connectors, display, motor. It is recommended to have a complete service every 1000 to 1500 km, particularly for the brakes, transmission and software updates if the bike has them. A well-lubricated chain, tires inflated to the correct pressure and a regularly checked motor are the guarantee of maintaining the performance of your e-bike over time.

♦ ♦ ♦ Electric Bike Timeline: From the Beginning to Today ♦ ♦ ♦

1895 – The first patents

The invention of the electric bicycle dates back to the late 19th century. In 1895, Ogden Bolton Jr. filed a U.S. patent for a bicycle equipped with an electric motor in the rear wheel, powered by a non-rechargeable battery.

1930–1960 – Experiments without commercial success

Some tests are being conducted in Europe and Japan, but technical limitations (weight of batteries, very low autonomy) prevent large-scale development.

1990 – The first models marketed in Japan

Yamaha launches the first modern electric-assist bicycle (motor + pedal sensor), with a rechargeable lead-acid battery. The concept initially appeals to Japanese seniors.

2000 – Timid arrival in Europe

The first electric bikes appeared in France, often perceived as bicycles for the elderly. Their high price and aesthetics still put off some people.

2010 – Technological boom and democratization

The arrival of engines Bosch And Shimano, more compact and efficient, is transforming the market. Lithium batteries improve range and reduce weight. E-bikes are becoming more stylish, more reliable, and are beginning to appeal to urban workers.

2017 – The VAE becomes a real alternative to the car

France is increasing purchasing subsidies through local authorities and the state. Electric bikes are part of soft mobility policies. The market has doubled in less than five years.

2020 – Explosion during the health crisis

With COVID-19, the French are seeking to avoid public transportation. Electric bicycles are becoming a "barrier" mode of transportation, driving a 29% increase in sales in 2020. Many cities are launching cycling plans (cycle paths, subsidies).

2023–2024 – A mature and diversified market

The electric bike is now a mainstream product, used for commuting, leisure, and hiking. All segments exist: urban e-bikes, cargo bikes, mountain bikes, gravel bikes, folding bikes, speedbikes, and more.
