The Trek Domane AL 4 Gen 4 pairs the Alpha Series 100 aluminium frame and carbon fork of the Domane AL with a Shimano Tiagra 2x11 drivetrain, for 10.10 kg in size 56. The 11-36 cassette gives it real reserves for the climbs, and the 11-speed spacing makes changes of pace smoother. In Gloss Supernova, a glossy brown set off with black, it shows understated elegance.

For the rider who has done their first seasons on an entry-level bike and wants to progress, the athlete coming from running or triathlon who is discovering road cycling, or anyone who doesn't want to sell their bike after a year. It remains affordable while offering a more refined drivetrain.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. Under the Domane AL 4, Trek uses its Alpha Series 100 alloy, chosen to withstand everyday use and accept mudguards, a top tube bag or wider tyres. The fork is carbon, steerer included, which softens the steering on rough surfaces. Universal UDH derailleur hanger and thru axles: spare parts are easy to find, a detail that matters on the day of a crash.
| Alpha 100 (Domane AL) | Alpha 300 (Émonda ALR) | OCLV 500 carbon (Domane SL) | |
| Level | The Domane AL aluminium | Trek's lightest aluminium | Entry-level road carbon |
| Construction | Welded tubes, carbon fork, plenty of mounts | Invisible Weld technology, the look of a carbon frame | Layers compacted under heat and pressure |
| Reference bike | Domane AL 4: 10.10 kg (size 56) | Émonda ALR 5: 9.17 kg (size 56) | Domane SL 5 Gen 5: 8.84 kg (size ML) |
| What it means | Mudguards possible, versatility, sensible budget | Livelier and lighter, 28 mm tyres max | Lighter still, Trek lifetime warranty on the frame |
The key point: at this level of the range, the weight difference with Alpha 300 comes down to tube design and mounts, not to a difference in quality. In return, Alpha 100 accepts winter equipment, which the Émonda ALR doesn't cater for.
Going from 8 to 11 speeds transforms group riding: the closer gaps let you keep a steady cadence when the bunch speeds up. The RS400 11-36 cassette paired with the 50/34 offers a very low gear that makes steep gradients manageable even with average fitness.
It is this low 34x36 that leads us to recommend the AL 4 for tackling the cols of the Espinouse or the climb to Saint-Pons-de-Thomières. The LG500 chain is built to last: with regular lubrication, it needs replacing less often, and we check its wear every time it comes into the workshop.
| Model | Material | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (size) |
| Domane AL 2 | Alpha 100 | Shimano Claris 2x8 | Paradigm 23 alloy | 10.35 kg (56) |
| Domane AL 4 | Alpha 100 | Shimano Tiagra 2x11 | Paradigm 23 alloy | 10.10 kg (56) |
| Domane AL 5 | Alpha 100 | Shimano 105 2x12 mechanical | Paradigm 23 alloy | 9.80 kg (56) |
| Domane SL 5 Gen 5 | OCLV 500 carbon | Shimano 105 mechanical | Aluminium | 8.84 kg (ML) |
Our take: compared with the AL 2, the AL 4 saves 250 g and gains three speeds and a 36-tooth sprocket. The AL 5 takes off another 300 g with 12-speed 105; for a rider who is progressing, the AL 4 offers the best balance between equipment and budget.

LVR sizing advice If you are unsure, the smaller size gives livelier steering, the larger one more stability on long descents. Cranks, handlebar and stem follow the size.

| Why 11 speeds? | Finer gaps between sprockets, so a steadier cadence. |
| Climbing cols? | Yes, the 34x36 gives a very easy gear for long gradients. |
| Difference from the AL 2? | Same frame; Tiagra 2x11, 11-36 cassette and 250 g less. |
| Mudguards in winter? | Yes, the frame and fork are drilled to take them. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict The most coherent Domane AL for making progress: identical frame, a much more enjoyable drivetrain than on the AL 2. We recommend it to the rider who already knows they will ride often.
