Who is it for?

For the cyclist following a training plan, the sportive rider who wants to manage their effort on long climbs, or anyone who wants to understand their progress. A power meter is a valuable tool for pacing your effort in a sportive.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Developed by Trek back in 1992, OCLV involves densifying the fibre sheets in a heated, pressurised mould so that no bubbles remain at the heart of the structure. The series shown measures the degree of optimisation: a higher number means less carbon is needed to achieve the same strength. The American manufacturer guarantees its OCLV frames for life.

ConstructionRobust layup, slightly more materialRigid 3D moulding, fewer fibre overlaps
Gen 5 Domane frameapprox. 1,055 gapprox. 835 g (unpainted, size ML)
What it meansTough, comfortable frame, more affordable priceAbout 220 g less on the frame; up to 20 % stronger than the previous OCLV 800

For a rider in training, the toughness of OCLV 500 lets you ride a lot without worrying about the frame. The weight saving of OCLV 900 matters less than consistent training.

The power meter is the big difference from the other Domane SL bikes: it measures your effort in watts, regardless of wind or gradient. On the cols of the hinterland, it lets you climb at a steady pace without going into the red.

The 44-tooth single chainring and 10-46 cassette offer a wide range, but with bigger gaps between sprockets than a double. For interval training on the flat, this sometimes means adapting your cadence.

Which Domane should you choose?

Our take: the SL 7 AXS 1x is the only Domane SL with a power meter as standard, 500 g lighter than the SL 6 AXS. The SLR 7 weighs 480 g less, but has no power meter.

Your questions

Do I need a computer?Yes, a compatible GPS computer to read the watts; we pair it in the workshop.
Useful in a sportive?Yes: pacing your effort on the cols helps you keep something in reserve for the finish.
Intervals on the flat?Yes, but the gaps between sprockets sometimes mean adapting your cadence.
Batteries to charge?Yes, those of the AXS drivetrain, with the SRAM charger supplied.

The LVR Cycles verdict

The Domane SL for progressing with reliable data, without having to add a power meter. For a rider who trains seriously, it is the most complete choice.

Pros
+ Power meter as standard
+ 51 mm carbon wheels
+ 8.14 kg in size ML
Cons
- Wider gaps between sprockets
- Batteries to keep an eye on
