Its lowest gear, 44x46, is easier than a classic 34x34 and lets you climb steep gradients seated. With its Aeolus Pro 51 carbon wheels, it weighs 8.14 kg in size ML.

For the cyclist setting out to conquer the cols of the Caroux and the Montagne Noire, the climber who wants a bail-out gear, or the rider preparing for a mountain sportive. The 44x46 and the 8.14 kg make climbs easier.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Developed by Trek back in 1992, OCLV involves densifying the fibre sheets in a heated, pressurised mould so that no bubbles remain at the heart of the structure. The series shown measures the degree of optimisation: a higher number means less carbon is needed to achieve the same strength. The American manufacturer guarantees its OCLV frames for life.
| OCLV 500 (Domane SL) | OCLV 900 (Domane SLR) | |
| Level | Entry-level carbon of the road range | Trek's most advanced carbon |
| Construction | Robust layup, slightly more material | Rigid 3D moulding, fewer fibre overlaps |
| Gen 5 Domane frame | approx. 1,055 g | approx. 835 g (unpainted, size ML) |
| What it means | Tough, comfortable frame, more affordable price | About 220 g less on the frame; up to 20 % stronger than the previous OCLV 800 |
In the mountains, the weight saving of OCLV 900 would be of interest, but OCLV 500 remains light and tough. At 8.14 kg, the SL 7 AXS 1x is already at ease on the climbs.
The 44x46 is an easier gear than a 34x34: it gets you up gradients of more than 10 % without forcing. The power meter helps you manage your effort on long climbs.
On descents, the 160 mm SRAM rotors deliver powerful, consistent braking, and the carbon wheels bring stability at high speed. Watch out for crosswinds on the ridges, though.
| Model | Carbon | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (ML) |
| Domane SL 5 | OCLV 500 | Shimano 105 mechanical | Aluminium | 8.84 kg |
| Domane SL 6 AXS | OCLV 500 | SRAM Rival AXS wireless | Carbon 50 mm | 8.64 kg |
| Domane SL 7 AXS 1x | OCLV 500 | SRAM Force XPLR 1x13 + power meter | Carbon 51 mm | 8.14 kg |
| Domane SLR 7 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Ultegra Di2 | Carbon 51 mm | 7.66 kg |
Our take: in the mountains, the SL 7 AXS 1x weighs 8.14 kg against 7.66 kg for the SLR 7, but its 44x46 is easier than the SLR 7's 34x34. On very steep cols, those 480 g matter less than the gearing.
