The Trek Domane AL 5 Gen 4 combines an Alpha Series 100 aluminium frame, a carbon fork and a Shimano 105 2x12 groupset, for a weight of 9.80 kg in size 56. Its top tube mounts, mudguard eyelets and 32 mm tyres let it switch from the daily commute to a sporty ride without changing bikes. The Fury Red colour, a bright, intense red, asserts its character.

Who is it for?

For the sporty commuter who rides to work at a good pace and sometimes extends it with a loop, the cyclist who wants to explore a few fast gravel tracks, or anyone who wants a single bike to do it all. It appeals to those who like expressive, versatile bikes.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. The Domane AL 5 frame is the same Alpha Series 100 as on the AL 2 and AL 4: the equipment makes the difference, with 550 g less than the AL 2 in size 56. Trek has paid attention to what makes life easier: cable housing integrated into the frame, full-carbon fork, mudguard eyelets front and rear and a UDH hanger. Together they form a sound base you keep for a long time, simply upgrading wheels and tyres.

Key point: the Alpha 300 of the Émonda ALR isn't aimed at the same use; it sacrifices versatility for 630 g less in size 56. The OCLV 500 carbon of the Domane SL 5 drops to 8.84 kg in size ML with the same 105 groupset: it is up to you to judge whether the difference justifies the jump.

The 12-speed 105 is a real plus for mixed use: you get away quickly at traffic lights with the 50-tooth ring and keep a 34x34 for tired rides home. The UDH hanger, a universal standard, makes replacement easy after a knock while parked, and the sealed hubs handle wet-weather journeys well.

On the vineyard tracks between Maraussan and Cazouls or along the banks of the Orb, the 32 mm tyres are enough to leave the tarmac without worry. For more adventurous use, we can recommend slightly wider tyres depending on the available clearance, to be checked together in the workshop.

Our take: for all-round use, the AL 5 weighs 300 g less than the AL 4 and has 12-speed 105; for riding mainly on tracks, a Checkpoint gravel bike will be better suited than the Émonda ALR, limited to 28 mm.

LVR sizing advice

The 105 and its 160 to 170 mm cranks follow your build; between two sizes, the larger one suits you if you are aiming for long distances with a more stretched-out position.
