Trek Supercaliber SL 9.6 Matte Carbon: getting into carbon full-suspension XC

The Gen 2 Trek Supercaliber SL 9.6 is the entry point to the family, but it keeps the OCLV Mountain SL carbon frame and 80 mm IsoStrut of the higher models. A 110 mm RockShox Reba RL fork, SRAM Eagle 70 1x12 drivetrain and a dropper post as standard, weighing 12.93 kg in size M. Matte Carbon/Gloss Black Splatter pairs matt carbon with glossy black splatters.

Who is it for?

For the mountain biker discovering cross-country who wants a carbon full-suspension bike built to last and evolve, or for the rider moving from a trail-riding mountain bike to something sportier. It will also suit first regional races.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Trek's OCLV carbon comes from compacting the fibres under high pressure and temperature, a process developed in 1992 to produce frames with no internal defects. For mountain biking, OCLV Mountain is calibrated to withstand rocks and crashes. The SL 9.6 gets the SL version, the same as the 9.7: so you benefit from the complete Supercaliber carbon frame, IsoStrut included, with Trek's lifetime warranty.

Put simply: the SL 9.6 is the most accessible way into the Supercaliber world. Its frame is the 9.7's; the difference lies in the mechanical drivetrain, the Reba fork and the alloy cockpit, for 750 g more.

The frame is identical to the 9.7's: it is the best base for upgrading the bike over the seasons. Lighter wheels, wireless shifting thanks to the UDH hanger, a higher-end fork: every improvement will be made on an already accomplished chassis.

The 110 mm Reba RL fork offers sound behaviour and a lockout for fire-road climbs. The 10-52 Eagle 70 drivetrain, with a 32-tooth chainring, gives low gearing for tackling the steep climbs of the Montagne Noire calmly.

Which Supercaliber should you choose?

Our take: at 12.93 kg in M, the SL 9.6 shares the frame of the SL 9.7 GX AXS, which saves 750 g thanks to wireless shifting and a carbon handlebar. The 9.6 remains the most accessible way into the Supercaliber.

LVR sizing advice

Between two sizes, the small one makes the bike easier to place for an XC beginner, the large one offers more stability. Handlebar, stem and dropper post are matched to each size.
