Trek Fuel LX 9 XT Lithium Grey: old-school Shimano enduro

The Trek Fuel LX 9 XT Gen 7 brings together an Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium frame, a 170 mm Fox Factory 38 fork, a 160 mm Fox DHX2 coil shock and a mechanical Shimano XT 1x12 drivetrain, for 17.79 kg in size M. The four-piston XT M8220 brakes, with a 203 mm rotor at the front, guarantee power on descents. Here it wears a lithium grey (Lithium Grey/Trek Black Splatter) splashed with black.

Who is it for?

It will appeal to the Shimano loyalist, attached to the feel of XT brakes and the simplicity of a cable-operated drivetrain, who rides enduro and wants first-rate Fox suspension. It is also a bike favoured by riders who maintain their own kit.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha NEXT Platinum: aluminium designed for enduro. This third and highest tier of Trek's MTB aluminium is reserved for the Gen 7 Fuels. On this Fuel LX 9 XT, it provides a frame that can be adjusted every which way: progression, rocker, shock mount. The threaded BSA bottom bracket does not creak and is easy to remove in the workshop, the ISCG 05 mounts accept a chain guide, and storage is built into the down tube.

In short: a frame made to last and to be tinkered with, without the fear of cracking carbon on a rock. The 17.79 kg in size M are those of a true descending bike that gets back up the hill under its own steam.

The Shimano XT M8220 brakes stand out for a lever with a firm bite point and progressive power. With a 203 mm RT86 rotor at the front and 180 mm at the rear, they handle the long descents of the Caroux without fading. Their mineral oil is simple to bleed, a job we carry out at every service.

The 12-speed XT drivetrain remains mechanical: a cable to change from time to time, a tension adjustment in two minutes. The 10-51 M8200 cassette offers a wide range for climbing, and the 30-tooth chainring stays suited to steep terrain. It is a proven groupset whose parts are easy to find.

Our take: at 17.79 kg in M, the LX 9 XT weighs 410 g more than the LX 9 Eagle 90 and 880 g more than the Fuel MX 9 XT. The carbon of the LX 9.8 XT Di2 brings the scales down to 15.97 kg.
