Trek Fuel EX 9.9 X0 AXS Dark Carmine: suspension made for fine-tuning

The Trek Fuel EX 9.9 X0 AXS Gen 7 relies on a very complete RockShox Ultimate suspension package: a Lyrik Ultimate fork with Charger 3.1 RC damper and DebonAir+ spring (150 mm), and a Super Deluxe Ultimate RC2T shock (145 mm). With its OCLV Mountain carbon frame and SRAM X0 AXS drivetrain, it weighs 14.08 kg in a size M. Its Gloss Dark Carmine/Matte Trek Black paint pairs a deep, glossy carmine with a rich matte black.

Who is it for?

It is aimed at the demanding mountain biker who likes to refine settings to suit the terrain and knows what they want from their suspension. It suits the rider who alternates technical rides through the garrigue with fast descents, and wants to tailor the bike to each.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Since 1992, Trek has cured its fibres under pressure for void-free frames. The Mountain version reinforces the areas hit by rocks and landings. Frameset: 3.31 kg (M), with lifetime warranty.

OCLV Mountain (Fuel EX 9.8 / 9.9)	Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel EX 5 to 9)	Road OCLV (Madone, Domane)
Level	MTB carbon, alloy frame rocker	Trek premium aluminium	Trek road carbon
Construction	OCLV reinforced in exposed areas	Hydroforming, smoothed welds	OCLV lightened to the maximum
Fuel EX frameset (M)	3.31 kg	4.95 kg	not applicable
What it means	Base of the lightest Fuel EX	1.64 kg more on the frame	Not made for MTB impacts

Put simply: same frame as the 9.8 models; the 1.20 kg saving over the 9.8 XT comes down to the kit.

The Charger 3.1 RC offers precise compression and rebound adjustment, and the spring's ButterCups filter out the fine vibrations that tire your hands. On the rough, rocky tracks around Béziers, they make a real difference to comfort after two hours in the saddle.

The Super Deluxe RC2T shock offers compression adjustment and a platform lever for climbing. Combined with the frame's adjustable progression, it lets you fine-tune the bike's behaviour; we offer a set-up session in our workshop.

Which Fuel should you choose?

Model	Frame	Travel rear / front	Drivetrain	Weight (M)
Fuel EX 9.8 XT	OCLV Mountain carbon	145 / 150 mm	Mechanical Shimano XT	15.28 kg
Fuel EX 9.9 X0 AXS	OCLV Mountain carbon	145 / 150 mm	Wireless SRAM X0 Eagle AXS	14.08 kg
Top Fuel 9.8 XT Di2	OCLV Mountain carbon	120 / 130 mm	Wireless Shimano XT Di2	14.00 kg
Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2	OCLV Mountain carbon	160 / 170 mm	Wireless Shimano XT Di2	15.97 kg

Our take: the RockShox Ultimate suspension on the 9.9 is the same as on the 9.8 Eagle 90: the gap widens with the carbon wheels, the wireless components and the scales, at 14.08 kg in M, the lightest in the Fuel EX range.

LVR sizing advice

If you are between two sizes, the smaller favours handling on technical trails, the larger composure when the terrain speeds up. The Reverb AXS goes from 150 mm in S to 200 mm from L, and size S uses a 27.5-inch rear wheel.

Size	S	M	L	XL	XXL
Rider height (cm)	155-165	165-177	177-188	188-195	195-203
Inseam (cm)	74-78	79-83	84-89	89-91	91-97
Dropper post (mm)	150	175	200	200	200
Wheels front / rear (in)	29 / 27.5	29 / 29	29 / 29	29 / 29	29 / 29

Your questions

What are ButterCups?	Elastomer elements in the fork that filter out small vibrations.
Do I have to set it up myself?	We give you a baseline suited to your weight, then you fine-tune it to your feel.
Suspension servicing?	It depends on use; we service both the Lyrik and the shock.
Is the carmine red loud?	It is rather dark and deep, and stands out nicely against the matte black.

The LVR Cycles verdict

A top-end Fuel EX for riders who like to set up their suspension precisely. The glossy carmine red on matte black captures its sporty character perfectly.

Pros
+ Highly adjustable RockShox Ultimate suspension
+ ButterCups against vibrations
+ Striking carmine and black contrast

Cons
- Settings take some getting used to
- Several AXS batteries
