For the curious rider who wants to ride on coastal sand out of season and where it is permitted, for the mountain dweller who wants to keep pedalling on the snow of the Espinouse or the Montagne Noire in winter, or for the traveller planning self-supported routes over soft terrain. It will also appeal to anyone looking for a different bike, stable and reassuring.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. For its fat bike, Trek chose Alpha Platinum, a more sophisticated aluminium than the Marlin's. The tubes are shaped to clear 4.50-inch tyres without making the bike excessively long, and the frame is studded with inserts to carry bags, mudguards and a rack. The revised geometry, with a steeper seat tube, puts the hips better over the bottom bracket.
| 4.50 in fat tyre (Farley) | 2.60 in trail tyre (Roscoe) | 2.40 in MTB tyre (Marlin) | |
| Favourite terrain | Sand, snow, deep mud | Rough trails and roots | Tracks and flowing singletrack |
| Tyre pressure | Very low, the tyre squashes | Low, tubeless | Medium |
| Efficiency on hard ground | Slow, heavy tyre | Decent | The best of the three |
| What it means | Gets through where others sink | Grip and comfort on descents | Versatility and lightness |
Put simply: a fat bike is not a more comfortable mountain bike for every day, it is a tool for soft terrain. On a hard track it rolls more slowly than a Marlin; on sand or snow, it keeps moving while the others are pushing.
It all comes down to pressure: a 4.50-inch tyre is run very low so it spreads out and floats, and that setting is what transforms the Farley. Overinflated, it bounces and spins; properly set, it grips on soft sand and packed snow. We show you how to adjust the pressure to the terrain, and going tubeless lets you run it even lower.
The carbon fork has inserts for cargo cages, and the frame is packed with mounts: top tube bag, strapless frame bag, mudguards and rack. The Gnarwhal tyres can take studs for ice. The SRAM Level hydraulic brakes and 11-48 cassette are enough to handle a heavy bike both uphill and downhill.
| Model | Fork | Drivetrain | Wheels / tyres | Weight (M) |
| Marlin 6 | RockShox Judy, 100 mm | Shimano CUES 1x10 + dropper post | Tubeless Ready rims | 15.00 kg |
| Marlin 7 | RockShox Judy Silver air, 100 mm | SRAM NX Eagle 1x12 + dropper post | Maxxis Rekon Tubeless Ready | 14.15 kg |
| Roscoe 8 | RockShox 35 Gold, 140 mm | SRAM GX Eagle 1x12 | 29 x 2.60 in Tubeless Ready | 13.54 kg |
| Farley 5 | Rigid carbon | microSHIFT Advent X 1x10 | 27.5 x 4.50 in (fat) | 16.20 kg |
Our take: the Farley 5 is the heaviest in the table at 16.20 kg in size M. It does not try to compete with a Marlin or a Roscoe on a dry trail: it opens up a playground those mountain bikes cannot tackle.

LVR sizing advice The Farley 5 comes in sizes S to XL. The stem and dropper post travel grow with the frame; between two sizes, the smaller one makes this wide bike easier to handle.

| Riding on the beach? | Yes, it is its favourite terrain, out of season and in permitted areas; rinse the drivetrain afterwards. |
| Can the tyres be studded? | Yes, the Gnarwhals accept studs for ice. |
| Versatile enough for everyday use? | It goes anywhere, but more slowly than a conventional mountain bike on hard ground. |
| How do I care for the satin fade? | With a gentle product, without a gloss polish that would mark the satin finish. |

The LVR Cycles verdict A well-designed fat bike, fitted with a carbon fork, a dropper post and plenty of mounts for heading far afield. Its sage blue and grey fade gives it a soft, original look.
