Who is it for?

For the rider who wants a proper cross-country mountain bike for two- to three-hour rides, garrigue tracks and their first singletrack, with a livelier geometry than a leisure mountain bike. Available from S to XL, it suits a 1.55 m teenager as well as a 1.95 m adult.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha Platinum aluminium, Trek's expertise. Trek grades its alloys in several levels: Alpha Silver for the Marlin, Alpha Platinum for the Procaliber 6 and 8, Alpha NEXT Platinum for the latest Fuel models. On the Procaliber 6, this frame gets all the current standards: tapered head tube, threaded BSA bottom bracket, UDH derailleur hanger and Boost 148 rear end. According to Trek, almost all of its alloy frames, including this one, are now produced with low-carbon aluminium made using renewable energy.

Put simply: this version of the Procaliber 6 moves to a full Deore M6200 drivetrain and 2.20-inch Bontrager Sainte-Anne tyres, narrower than the 2.40s on the other alloy Procalibers. Claimed at 14.08 kg in M, it is only 70 g lighter than a Marlin 7: its appeal lies elsewhere, in the XC geometry, the air fork and the dropper post supplied in every size.

The Deore M6200 groupset is the benchmark for affordable performance mountain biking: crisp shifting, easy-to-find spare parts and reasonable maintenance. With a 32-tooth chainring and a 10-51 cassette, the 32x51 lets you tackle the climbs of the Caroux while staying seated.

The 2.20-inch Bontrager Sainte-Anne Pro XR tyres favour efficiency on the dry, hardpacked tracks around Béziers. For rougher trails, the 23 mm Kovee rim accepts wider tyres, which we set up tubeless at low pressure for extra grip.

Which Procaliber should you choose?

Our take: compared with the Marlin 7, this Procaliber 6 is only 70 g lighter, but it adds a 120 mm air fork and the dropper post. The Procaliber 8 with SRAM Eagle 70 drops to 13.73 kg with a Recon Gold fork.

LVR sizing advice

Between two sizes, the smaller one makes the bike more agile on tight singletrack, the larger one more stable on fast tracks. In S, the handlebar is 720 mm and the stem 50 mm; the dropper travel grows with the frame.

Your questions

Good for getting into mountain biking?Yes, if you are aiming for sporty riding; for gentle outings, a Marlin is enough.
Why 2.20 tyres? They roll fast on dry ground; 2.40s can be fitted for more grip.
What dropper post travel? It depends on the frame: 100 mm in S and M, 150 mm in ML and L, 170 mm in XL.
Does this dark red age well?Yes, a dark shade hides micro-scratches and dust better than a light colour.

The LVR Cycles verdict

A serious, well-bred Procaliber 6 that opens the door to cross-country with a reliable Deore drivetrain. The serpentine red gives it a sporty look without being flashy.

Pros
+ Reliable Shimano Deore M6200
+ Size range from S to XL
