Trek Procaliber 6 Desert Sage: a first race number on a hardtail

Designed for sporty trail rides as well as first races, the Trek Procaliber 6 combines an Alpha Platinum aluminium frame, a 120 mm RockShox fork with air spring and a Shimano Deore 1x12 groupset, for 14.08 kg in a size M. For the rider preparing for their first timed mountain bike events or a regional raid, who wants a hardtail that is efficient on the climbs without sacrificing fun on the descents thanks to the dropper post. It also suits riders who will alternate sporty rides with everyday trips.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha Platinum aluminium, Trek's expertise. Trek grades its alloys in several levels: Alpha Silver for the Marlin, Alpha Platinum for the Procaliber 6 and 8, Alpha NEXT Platinum for the latest Fuel models. On the Procaliber 6, this frame gets all the current standards: tapered head tube, threaded BSA bottom bracket, UDH derailleur hanger and Boost 148 rear end. According to Trek, almost all of its alloy frames, including this one, are now produced with low-carbon aluminium made using renewable energy.

What it meansXC geometry, solid frame, controlled budgetVersatile for leisure rides and tracks, heavierLighter, more compliant rear end

Put simply: this version of the Procaliber 6 moves to a full Deore M6200 drivetrain and 2.20-inch Bontrager Sainte-Anne tyres, narrower than the 2.40s on the other alloy Procalibers. Claimed at 14.08 kg in M, it is only 70 g lighter than a Marlin 7: its appeal lies elsewhere, in the XC geometry, the air fork and the dropper post supplied in every size.

On a 40 or 50 km event in the hinterland, the fork lockout makes a real difference on tarmac links and long tracks: less bobbing, more efficiency. The TurnKey lever needs just a quarter turn at the top of the right stanchion.

The threaded BSA bottom bracket and the UDH hanger are two standards that make life easier: the bottom bracket can be changed without frame-specific tools, and the derailleur hanger is easy to find after a crash. We recommend a fork service after each race season.

Which Procaliber should you choose?

Procaliber 9.5 (Fox Rhythm)OCLV Mountain, IsoBowShimano Deore 1x12Fox Rhythm 34, 120 mm12.73 kg

Our take: at 14.08 kg in M, this Procaliber 6 is heavier than the XT derailleur version (13.56 kg); on the other hand, it gains sizes from S to XL and a dropper post whose travel matches the frame.

LVR sizing advice

Between two sizes, the smaller one makes the bike more agile on tight singletrack, the larger one more stable on fast tracks. In S, the handlebar is 720 mm and the stem 50 mm; the dropper travel grows with the frame.
