Trek Speed Concept SLR 7 hex blue: built for the clock

With its OCLV Series 800 carbon frame and Kammtail Virtual Foil tubes, the Trek Speed Concept SLR 7 is aimed first and foremost at those who race against the clock; it weighs 8.97 kg in size M with Shimano Ultegra Di2 and Aeolus Pro 37 wheels. This Hex Blue/Trek Black colourway, a deep blue paired with black, is only available in sizes M and XL. The cranks listed by Trek are slightly longer than on the other colourways: 170 mm in M, 172.5 mm in XL.

Who is it for?

For the club rider who takes part in individual and team time trials on the regional calendar, or the duathlete who links running and cycling on draft-free courses. It is aimed at medium and tall riders, between 167 and 175 cm or between 186 and 198 cm according to the Trek guide.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Since 1992, Trek has compacted its carbon fibre layers under heat and pressure to eliminate micro-voids, the air bubbles that weaken a structure. On the Speed Concept SLR 7, this expertise is put to work for aerodynamics: OCLV Series 800 makes it possible to mould very deep KVF tubes that stay stiff despite their large surface area. Like all OCLV frames, it is covered by the Trek lifetime warranty.

What it meansStiff and durable, integrated storage and IsoSpeedUp to 20% stronger than OCLV 800Heavier, more affordable budget

Put simply: OCLV 800 is no compromise on a triathlon bike. The frame weighs more than a road bike frame, but the difference comes from the aero tubes and storage, and on the flat it is air resistance that decides your time.

In time trials, a consistent position is what delivers results: the SLR seatpost, available with an 11.5 or 20 mm offset, lets you move the saddle forward to open the hip angle without losing support on the extensions. The longer cranks on this colourway suit powerful riders, less so those who pedal with a high cadence.

On the straight roads of the wine-growing plain between Béziers and Capestang, IsoSpeed filters out the tarmac joints that would otherwise force you to come out of position. The 160 mm rotors and the calliper integrated into the fork keep braking sharp, provided the system is bled regularly, which we take care of in the workshop.

Which Speed Concept should you choose?

Our take: the same bike as the other SLR 7 models, apart from the crank length. If size M or XL does not suit you, the SLR 7 is available in S and L in other colourways, and the SLR 7 AXS adds a power meter.

LVR sizing advice

On a triathlon bike, size is confirmed with a bike fit: reach, extension height and saddle setback matter as much as the rider's height. The SLR seatpost comes in two offsets, 11.5 or 20 mm.

170 mm cranks in M?Yes, according to Trek; we can adapt them to your pedalling style.

The LVR Cycles verdict

A genuine time trial bike, understated in its deep blue, for strong riders in size M or XL. Its longer cranks make it the Speed Concept SLR 7 for riders who push big gears.

Pros
+ Long cranks for strong riders
+ SLR seatpost with two offsets
+ Discreet blue and black
Cons
- Only two sizes
- Cranks less suited to high cadence

Why buy from LVR Cycles? Our Béziers workshop checks every Speed Concept before handover, adapts the crank length if needed and dials in your time trial position during a bike fit.
