Trek Speed Concept SLR 7 matte deep smoke: set for long distance

In the Matte Deep Smoke colourway, the Trek Speed Concept SLR 7 dresses its OCLV Series 800 frame in a very dark, matt smoked grey that is almost black. Equipped with Shimano Ultegra Di2 2x12 and Aeolus Pro 37 carbon wheels, it weighs 8.97 kg in size M. This version comes as standard with the carbon-shell Bontrager Hilo Pro saddle, a welcome touch when the bike leg goes beyond five hours.

Who is it for?

For the triathlete preparing for an Ironman or a 70.3 who spends long hours in the aero position in training. It is aimed at the consistent athlete who prefers a bike that stays comfortable over time to an extreme machine that is hard to hold in the last hour of the bike leg.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Since 1992, Trek has compacted its carbon fibre layers under heat and pressure to eliminate micro-voids, the air bubbles that weaken a structure. On the Speed Concept SLR 7, this expertise is put to work for aerodynamics: OCLV Series 800 makes it possible to mould very deep KVF tubes that stay stiff despite their large surface area. Like all OCLV frames, it is covered by the Trek lifetime warranty.

What it meansStiff and durable, integrated storage and IsoSpeedUp to 20% stronger than OCLV 800Heavier, more affordable budget

Put simply: OCLV 800 is no compromise on a triathlon bike. The frame weighs more than a road bike frame, but the difference comes from the aero tubes and storage, and on the flat it is air resistance that decides your time.

Over a 180 km course, comfort is a performance factor: a position you can no longer hold after four hours costs far more time than a slightly heavier frame. IsoSpeed and the Hilo saddle, designed for the forward position of triathlon, both work towards that goal.

Hydration and nutrition must stay within reach without spoiling the aerodynamics: we configure the cockpit and compatible storage accessories with you. On your long rides out to Lac du Salagou or along the Canal du Midi, the 36x30 gives you a comfortable margin on the climbs on the way home.

Which Speed Concept should you choose?

Speed Concept SLR 9 AXSOCLV 800SRAM RED AXS + power meterAeolus RSL 51n/a (frame 1,522 g)

Our take: for long distance, this SLR 7 with the Hilo Pro saddle is a solid starting point; the SLR 7 AXS weighs 50 g more but brings a power meter, invaluable for managing your pace over 180 km.

LVR sizing advice

On a triathlon bike, size is confirmed with a bike fit: reach, extension height and saddle setback matter as much as the rider's height. The SLR seatpost comes in two offsets, 11.5 or 20 mm.
