Who is it for?
For the medium-height rider who wants a top-end Madone that stands out on the Sunday group ride, the lover of beautiful machines who chooses the paint first, or the rider who was hesitating over waiting for a custom build and finds a ready-to-ride bike here.
The LVR workshop view
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. On this Madone SLR 9 AXS, Trek uses OCLV Series 900, the pinnacle of carbon expertise that began in 1992. The principle never changes: each stack of fibres goes into a heated press to eliminate the air bubbles that would weaken the structure. The 3D moulding specific to Series 900 limits the areas where plies overlap, resulting in a painted frame of 796 g in ML and a 350 g fork. Like every OCLV frame, it benefits from the Trek lifetime warranty.
| OCLV 900 (Madone SLR) | OCLV 500 (Madone SL) | OCLV 800 (Speed Concept) | |
| Level | Trek's most refined carbon | Entry-level road carbon | Trek's former top-end road carbon |
| Construction | 3D moulding, reduced ply overlaps | Same process, more generous lay-up | Proven lay-up, integration comes first |
| Reference bike | Madone SLR: painted frame 796 g (ML), fork 350 g | Madone SL: painted frame 1,054 g (ML), fork 363 g | Speed Concept SLR: painted frame 1,522 g |
| What it means | 271 g less than the SL on frame and fork; up to 20% stronger than OCLV 800 | Same aero shapes, separate bar and stem, gentler budget | Still very high-performing, reserved for triathlon at Trek |
Put simply: between a Madone SL and this SLR, the 271 g difference on the frame and fork is felt mainly on long climbs and when accelerating. The real leap of the SLR 9 AXS also lies in what it comes with: RED E1 groupset, power meter and one-piece bar/stem, three features you will not find together further down the range.
A particular feature of this bike: the Trek spec sheet lists 170 mm cranks in size M, whereas the other colourways of this model come with 165 mm in this size. For a rider of 1.65 m, we discuss it before purchase: length affects cadence and hip angle, and we can change it in the workshop if needed.
The one-piece Aero RSL cockpit measures 39 cm at the hoods in M, a narrow width that tucks the shoulders in against the wind. On the windy coastal roads between Portiragnes and Vias, this compact position combined with the Full System Foil tubes helps you hold your pace when the sea breeze blows head-on.
Which Madone should you choose?
| Model | Carbon | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (size) |
| Madone SLR 7 AXS | OCLV 900 | SRAM Force AXS | Aeolus Pro 51 carbon | 7.22 kg (ML) |
| Madone SLR 9 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 | Aeolus RSL 51 carbon | 7.05 kg (ML) |
| Madone SLR 9 AXS | OCLV 900 | SRAM RED AXS E1 + power meter | Aeolus RSL 51 carbon | 7.00 kg (ML) |
| Madone SLR 9 AXS 1x | OCLV 900 | SRAM RED E1 1x12 + power meter | Aeolus RSL 37 carbon | 6.40 kg (ML) |
Our take: with the same equipment as the other SLR 9 AXS models, only the paint and the single size set this bike apart. The SLR 9 Dura-Ace Di2 weighs 50 g more without a power meter; the 1x saves 600 g by giving up the second chainring.
