The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Trek has made its carbon frames using the OCLV process for more than thirty years: each fibre layer is consolidated in a heated mould under pressure so that no micro-bubbles remain. The higher the series, the more optimised the lay-up and the less carbon is needed to withstand the same loads. The Madone SL 6 stays with OCLV 500, with a painted frame of 1,054 g in ML, and benefits from the Trek lifetime warranty.

What it meansElectronics and carbon wheels at this priceOne-piece Aero RSL cockpit, Ultegra Di2The SLR is aimed at racing and the mountains

Put simply: with the SL 6, Trek prioritises electronics and carbon wheels over OCLV 900 carbon. For most riders, instant shifting and 50 mm rims pay off more day to day than 271 g saved on the frameset.

In a race, Di2 lets you stay focused on your line: shifts take a single press, even out of the saddle, and do not go out of adjustment after a crash or a car journey. The 50 mm carbon wheels hold speed in breakaways and fast turns on the front.

The frame is as aerodynamic as the Gen 7 Madone. At 8.16 kg in ML, it is well above the 6.8 kg UCI minimum, so no worries at the weigh-in. Hydraulic brakes and 28 mm tyres give confidence in circuit race corners.

Which Madone should you choose?

Madone SLR 7OCLV 900Shimano Ultegra Di2 2x12Aeolus Pro 51 carbon7.52 kg (ML)

Our take: the SL 6 saves 280 g over the SL 5 Pro thanks to Di2 and 50 mm wheels. For racing, the SL 7 with its Ultegra Di2 saves a further 290 g, at 7.87 kg.
