For the tall rider with long limbs who pushes big gears and wants a stiff race bike, for the powerful rouleur who spends a lot of time on the front of the group, or for the tall sportive rider who wants an aero frame with no compromise on components.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. OCLV stands for Optimum Compaction, Low Void: since 1992, pressure and temperature have driven out the air trapped between the fibre layers. The Madone SL 7 uses the 500 series, shared by all Madone SL models, and it is its components, more than its frame, that set it apart from its little brothers. Like all OCLV frames, it is covered by Trek's lifetime warranty.
| OCLV 500 (Madone SL) | OCLV 900 (Madone SLR) | OCLV 800 (Speed Concept SLR) | |
| Level | Entry-level carbon of the road range | Trek's most refined carbon | Trek's former top-end road carbon |
| Construction | OCLV process, slightly thicker layup | 3D moulding, fewer overlaps, up to 20 % stronger than OCLV 800 | Layup designed for aero and integration |
| Reference bike | Madone SL 7: 7.87 kg (ML) | Madone SLR 7 AXS: 7.22 kg (ML) | Speed Concept SLR 7: 8.97 kg (M) |
| What it means | Painted frame 1,054 g + fork 363 g (ML), sensible budget | Painted frame 796 g + fork 350 g (ML), one-piece bar and stem | Painted frame 1,522 g + fork 410 g, triathlon bike |
Put simply: the SL 7 combines the SL frame with SLR-level components, Ultegra Di2, Aeolus Pro 51 wheels and a carbon handlebar. Moving up to the SLR 7 with the same groupset saves 350 g, mainly on the frame and cockpit: noticeable on a col, much less so on the flat or sitting in a group.
172.5 mm cranks suit long thigh bones and provide useful leverage on climbs, provided you keep good hip flexibility. We check this during the bike fit: saddle height, setback and stem length are then adjusted to make the most of this geometry.
The R3 Hard-Case Lite tyres focus on puncture resistance, useful for daily training on the gravelly roads around Murviel or Cessenon. The carbon aero handlebar gives a wide, comfortable grip, and the 100 mm RCS Pro stem can be swapped if you need a longer position.
| Model | Carbon | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (size) |
| Madone SL 6 AXS | OCLV 500 | SRAM Rival AXS wireless | Aeolus Elite 48 carbon | 8.11 kg (ML) |
| Madone SL 7 | OCLV 500 | Shimano Ultegra Di2 | Aeolus Pro 51 carbon | 7.87 kg (ML) |
| Madone SLR 7 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Ultegra Di2 | Aeolus Pro 51 carbon | 7.52 kg (ML) |
| Madone SLR 9 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 | Aeolus RSL 51 carbon | 7.05 kg (ML) |
Our take: in size L, this SL 7 offers the full specification of the SL range; the SLR 7, with the same groupset, weighs 350 g less in ML. For a tall, powerful rider, stiffness often matters more than those grams.
