The SwissStop Catalyst One 140mm brake disc is designed to provide powerful braking and high durability. It is available in different sizes and is suitable for all applications, whether road, cyclocross, cross-country or downhill. The rounded outer edges allow use in accordance with UCI regulations for road races (140 and 160 mm). Plus, wear indicators in the form of three small holes on either side of the rotor help you know when it's time to replace the brake rotor. It is compatible with all organic and metallic brake pads, and offers optimal performance with SwissStop EXOTherm2 and Disc RS pads.
- Thickness of 1.95 mm for optimal resistance.
- Efficient heat dissipation.
- Reliable performance, whether in cyclocross, downhill or other disciplines.
- Long service life, even under difficult conditions.
- Tested and approved by the UCI in sizes of 140 and 160 mm.
- Wear indicators for easy maintenance.
- Compatible with organic and sintered brake pads.
- Can be used with an adapter for Centerlock hubs.
- Optimized for use with SwissStop EXOTherm2 and Disc RS pads.
At the beginning of 2015, the SwissStop engineering team undertook a series of laboratory tests on bicycle brake discs. From the collected data, engineers created digital models of the rotors and used sophisticated software to simulate the same test conditions. The results of these simulations confirmed their accuracy and efficiency, which led to the extensive development, testing and evaluation of several digital prototypes.
The heat dissipation of each model was carefully measured using the simulation software, taking into account convection, radiation, area and weight. These factors helped determine the optimal design to achieve maximum heat dissipation and strength, while minimizing weight. The structure of each design was evaluated by subjecting the rotor to braking forces ranging from typical manual force to the theoretical maximum force. These tests identified critical pressure points in the structure to maximize rotor strength and stiffness.
Computerized Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were used to measure the airflow over the rotor surface and through the cutouts. Different profiles were tested to evaluate the effects of asymmetrical cutouts and to optimize the cooling effect of airflow on surfaces.
In collaboration with the Institute of the Technical University of Applied Sciences (HSR) in Rapperswil, thermodynamic simulations, structural analyzes and visualizations of fluid dynamics were carried out.
Lab testing of the Catalyst One brake disc confirmed the simulation results. During continuous load testing, the Catalyst demonstrated exceptional performance. Unlike conventional braking systems which wear out over time and lose efficiency (fading), the Catalyst provides consistent braking torque over the long term. Further tests revealed extremely efficient heat management, significantly shorter braking distances, minimal wear and exceptional structural durability under heavy braking. Overall, the Catalyst has outperformed the current leading models on the market.
Thanks to practical tests carried out on prototypes, the development team was able to determine the optimal ratio between two essential but contradictory characteristics: braking power and weight. Strategically adding a few grams of extra material to the outer ring immediately reduced braking distances. In some cases, engineers added more material to further improve performance and durability.
