For riders returning to cycling after years off the bike, or whose hip mobility makes it hard to step over a conventional frame. It also reassures people who stop often and want to put both feet down quickly.
A step-through frame designed for frequent stops. The Charter+ 4 R9 Lowstep is built on Alpha Platinum aluminium, one of the higher grades of Trek's alloys. Its low step-over lets you put a foot down at every red light without contortions, and Trek has integrated the rack and mudguards into the frame, avoiding add-on mounts that work loose over time. The 540 Wh battery slides in through the top of the down tube.
| Shimano CUES derailleur | Nexus 5 hub + belt | Enviolo hub + belt | |
| How it works | 9 sprockets and a Linkglide chain | 5 gears enclosed in the hub | Continuously variable, no steps |

| What it means | Widest gear range | Shifts at a standstill, clean | The ideal gear at any moment |
In short: this is the entry point to the step-through Charter+, with a 9-speed Shimano CUES derailleur and a 75 Nm Bosch motor. At 30.80 kg in size M according to Trek, it's aimed at everyday journeys and half-day rides.
The cockpit is adjustable: the Bontrager height-adjustable stem lets you raise the 630 mm bar for an upright upper body, or lower it for a more active position. This adjustment takes the strain off your wrists and back, and we do it with you in the shop rather than leaving you to guess.
The Bosch Performance Line motor delivers 75 Nm: enough to climb the street up to Saint-Nazaire cathedral without getting out of the saddle. The Shimano MT200 hydraulic brakes and their 180 mm rotors need little force at the lever, a real plus for less strong hands.
| Model | Motor / battery | Drivetrain | Fork | Weight (size) |
| Charter+ 4 R9 540 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line 75 Nm / 540 Wh | Shimano CUES 9-speed | 63 mm coil | 30.80 kg (M) |
| Charter+ 4 R9 800 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line 75 Nm / 800 Wh | Shimano CUES 9-speed | 63 mm coil | 31.70 kg (M) |
| Charter+ 4 Trail 540 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line 75 Nm / 540 Wh | Shimano CUES 9-speed | XCR32 80 mm | 27.80 kg (M) |
| Charter+ 4 Nexus 5 belt 540 Wh Lowstep | Bosch Performance Line 75 Nm / 540 Wh | Nexus 5 + belt | 63 mm coil | 30.60 kg (M) |
Our take: the R9 540 Wh Lowstep shares its frame and equipment with the Trail 540 Wh Lowstep, but keeps a 630 mm bar and a 63 mm fork better suited to the road. If hills worry you, the Charter+ 5 R10 540 Wh moves up to 90 Nm for 30.30 kg in M.

LVR sizing advice You get onto the Lowstep frame from the front, without lifting your leg: the size is chosen mainly on saddle height and reach. Trek's ranges overlap between M and L (170 to 173 cm); in that case, the smaller size gives a more upright position and the larger one more room for long rides. The height-adjustable stem then fine-tunes the position.

| I'm 1.52 m tall, what size? | Size S covers 147 to 155 cm according to Trek; we confirm it with your inside leg measurement. |
| Does the bike stand up on its own? | Yes, a Pletscher Comp Flex 40 kickstand is fitted as standard. |
| Are the brakes hard to pull? | No, the MT200 hydraulic brakes work with one or two fingers. |
| Is the black visible in the evening? | The reflective tyre sidewalls make up for the dark colour in headlights. |

The LVR Cycles verdict A reassuring Charter+ for getting back into cycling, thanks to its step-through frame, adjustable position and light-action brakes. Dark Web black gives it an understated, polished look.
