For the rider who wants to leave the road without moving to a mountain bike: vineyard tracks, gravel lanes, hard-packed greenways. The step-through frame reassures those who often put a foot down on uneven ground.

The LVR workshop view

The Charter+ that's happy to leave the tarmac. The Trail version keeps the step-through Alpha Platinum aluminium frame and its integrated equipment, but changes everything that touches the terrain: an 80 mm SR Suntour XCR32 fork with tapered steerer, Bontrager Connection Elite tyres and a 720 mm flat bar. With the 800 Wh PowerTube, it's the most exploration-focused version of the Lowstep range.

What it meansConfident on tracks and trailsRoad and greenwaysMore torque, stronger braking

In short: the Charter+ 4 Trail 800 Wh Lowstep pairs the big battery with a more off-road-ready chassis. It weighs 31.70 kg in size M according to Trek, like the R9 800 Wh, but you steer it with a much wider bar.

The XCR32 fork offers 80 mm of travel, compared with 63 mm on the road-oriented Charter+ 4 models, with a stiffer tapered steerer and a lockout for long stretches of tarmac. On the stony tracks of the hinterland, it absorbs impacts better and keeps the front wheel in contact with the ground.

The 720 mm flat bar, with just 5 mm of rise, gives you plenty of leverage to hold your line in ruts; it tilts the position slightly forward. The Bosch assistance, which stops at 25 km/h, is especially valuable for climbing short, steep dirt ramps where you quickly lose momentum.

Which Charter+ should you choose?

Our take: at 31.70 kg in M, this Trail 800 Wh weighs the same as the R9 800 Wh, but gains an 80 mm fork and a wide bar. The Trail 540 Wh Lowstep is quoted at 27.80 kg in M, if lightness matters more than capacity.

LVR sizing advice

You get onto the Lowstep frame from the front, without lifting your leg: the size is chosen mainly on saddle height and reach. Trek's ranges overlap between M and L (170 to 173 cm); in that case, the smaller size gives a more upright position and the larger one more room for long rides. The height-adjustable stem then fine-tunes the position.
