The Trek Domane SL 5 Gen 4 pairs an OCLV Series 500 carbon frame with rear IsoSpeed and a mechanical Shimano 105 2x12 drivetrain, for 9.09 kg in size 56. For the rider moving from aluminium to carbon, someone getting back on the bike after a break who wants an upright position, or the novice sportive rider preparing for their first 100 km. The sizes offered here, from 47 to 56, also suit slight riders who struggle to find a suitable carbon frame.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Since 1992, Trek has built its frames using the OCLV process: heat and pressure compress the fibre plies and eliminate air pockets, the real weak points of a tube. The number attached to the acronym measures how refined that optimisation is; a higher number gives the same stiffness with less material. Your frame is covered by the Trek lifetime warranty.
| OCLV 500 (Domane SL) | OCLV 900 (Domane SLR) | |
| Position | Entry point of the road carbon range, here on the Domane SL | Top of the range, reserved for SLR models |
| Process | Same OCLV compaction, more generous layup | Rigid 3D moulding, fewer overlaps |
| Benchmark (Gen 5 frame, ML) | approx. 1,055 g | approx. 835 g unpainted |
| For you | Strength and comfort, sensible budget | Weight saving, up to 20 % stronger than OCLV 800 |
What sets this Gen 4 apart is rear IsoSpeed: the seat tube is decoupled from the top tube and can flex over bumps, which spares your lower back on the coarse roads of the Minervois. Add the KVF aero seatpost and 32 mm tyres, and the bike stays smooth even after four hours in the saddle. The storage compartment in the down tube carries everything you need to fix a puncture, with no saddle bag.
The mechanical 12-speed Shimano 105 has an underrated virtue: no battery to keep an eye on, and an adjustment we can do in a few minutes in the workshop. The 50/34 paired with the 11-34 cassette lets you climb the ramps of the Caroux at an easy pace. The Paradigm alloy rims are tough; they will be the first parts to upgrade to carbon if you get a taste for speed.
| Model | Frame | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (size) |
| Domane SL 5 Gen 4 | OCLV 500, IsoSpeed, 38 mm max. | Shimano 105 mechanical | Aluminium | 9.09 kg (56) |
| Domane SL 6 Gen 4 | OCLV 500, IsoSpeed, 38 mm max. | Shimano 105 Di2 | Carbon 35 mm | 8.89 kg (56) |
| Domane SL 7 Gen 4 | OCLV 500, IsoSpeed, 38 mm max. | Shimano Ultegra Di2 | Carbon 51 mm | 8.42 kg (56) |
| Domane SL 5 (Gen 5) | OCLV 500, no IsoSpeed, 40 mm max. | Shimano 105 mechanical | Aluminium | 8.84 kg (ML) |
Our take: the SL 5 Gen 4 keeps IsoSpeed and integrated storage, whereas the Gen 5 SL 5 weighs 8.84 kg in ML against 9.09 kg in 56 and takes 40 mm tyres instead of 38. Stepping up to the SL 6 Gen 4 saves 200 g, with Di2 and carbon wheels.
