For the rider who strings together 150 or 200 km audaxes, the tall cyclist looking for a carbon frame in 58 or 60, or anyone who wants a reliable bike to ride all year round with no electronics to charge. Its endurance geometry is kind to your neck on long days out.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Since 1992, Trek has built its frames using the OCLV process: heat and pressure compress the fibre plies and eliminate air pockets, the real weak points of a tube. The number attached to the acronym measures how refined that optimisation is; a higher number gives the same stiffness with less material. Your frame is covered by the Trek lifetime warranty.
| OCLV 500 (Domane SL) | OCLV 900 (Domane SLR) | |
| Position | Entry point of the road carbon range, here on the Domane SL | Top of the range, reserved for SLR models |
| Process | Same OCLV compaction, more generous layup | Rigid 3D moulding, fewer overlaps |
| Benchmark (Gen 5 frame, ML) | approx. 1,055 g | approx. 835 g unpainted |
| For you | Strength and comfort, sensible budget | Weight saving, up to 20 % stronger than OCLV 800 |
The Kammtail tubes, truncated at the back, bring an aerodynamic gain without adding weight to the frame; against the tramontane sweeping across the plain around Béziers, you feel it on the long straight roads towards the sea. The KVF post follows the same logic, and its 20 mm offset helps riders with long thighs find the right saddle setback.
Over 200 km, rear IsoSpeed really earns its keep: by letting the seat tube flex slightly, it stops every tarmac joint from travelling up your back. In the workshop, the threaded T47 bottom bracket and mechanical drivetrain make this Domane an easy bike to look after; a check of the cables and chain before the season is usually enough.
| Model | Frame | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (size) |
| Domane SL 5 Gen 4 | OCLV 500, IsoSpeed, 38 mm max. | Shimano 105 mechanical | Aluminium | 9.09 kg (56) |
| Domane SL 6 Gen 4 | OCLV 500, IsoSpeed, 38 mm max. | Shimano 105 Di2 | Carbon 35 mm | 8.89 kg (56) |
| Domane SL 7 Gen 4 | OCLV 500, IsoSpeed, 38 mm max. | Shimano Ultegra Di2 | Carbon 51 mm | 8.42 kg (56) |
| Domane SL 5 (Gen 5) | OCLV 500, no IsoSpeed, 40 mm max. | Shimano 105 mechanical | Aluminium | 8.84 kg (ML) |
Our take: at 9.09 kg in 56, the SL 5 Gen 4 gives away 250 g to the Gen 5 SL 5 (8.84 kg in ML), which takes 40 mm tyres; in return it keeps IsoSpeed and in-frame storage. The SL 6 Gen 4 adds Di2 and carbon wheels for 200 g less.
