For the cyclist who heads off to climb the Pic de Nore, the Col de Fontfroide or the roads of the Caroux at the weekend, the rider preparing a hilly sportive, or the heavier rider who appreciates a bail-out gear. It suits an occasional climber as well as a cyclist discovering the mountains.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Behind the OCLV acronym lies an in-house process launched by Trek in 1992: each part is put under pressure and then cured to drive out the air trapped between the plies, the main source of weakness in carbon. The number that goes with the name (500, 900) tells you how refined the layup is; the higher it goes, the fewer fibres the frame needs for equivalent stiffness. These frames are covered by a Trek lifetime warranty.
| OCLV 500 (Domane SL) | OCLV 900 (Domane SLR) | |
| Level | Entry-level carbon of the road range | Trek's most advanced carbon |
| Construction | Robust layup, slightly more material | Rigid 3D moulding, fewer fibre overlaps |
| Gen 5 Domane frame | approx. 1,055 g | approx. 835 g (unpainted, size ML) |
| What it means | Tough, comfortable frame, more affordable price | About 220 g less on the frame; up to 20 % stronger than the previous OCLV 800 |
On a climb, what matters most is not the kilo of difference with a top-end bike but the ability to turn your legs without forcing. Trek's entry-level carbon already offers a frame that is stiff under pedalling.
The 34x34 gives a one-to-one ratio: for every turn of the pedals, the wheel turns once. That is what lets you keep a decent cadence on 8 or 10 % sections. At the top end, the 50x11 is still enough to pick up speed on the descents.
On long descents, the 160 mm Shimano rotors prevent hand fatigue, and the upright position helps you keep your eyes far ahead. After a summer of cols, we recommend a pad and chain check in the workshop.
| Model | Carbon | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (ML) |
| Domane SL 5 | OCLV 500 | Shimano 105 mechanical | Aluminium | 8.84 kg |
| Domane SL 6 AXS | OCLV 500 | SRAM Rival AXS wireless | Carbon 50 mm | 8.64 kg |
| Domane SL 7 AXS 1x | OCLV 500 | SRAM Force XPLR 1x13 + power meter | Carbon 51 mm | 8.14 kg |
| Domane SLR 7 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Ultegra Di2 | Carbon 51 mm | 7.66 kg |
Our take: in the mountains, the SL 5 is 200 g heavier than the SL 6 AXS and 1.18 kg heavier than the SLR 7. If you mainly climb for pleasure, its 34x34 matters more than those grams.

LVR sizing advice For climbing, the ideal size lets you stand up out of the saddle without your knees touching the bar. If in doubt, come and try it. Cranks, handlebar and stem follow the size.
