The Matte Era White/Deep Smoke colourway combines a matt white and a smoky black on this Trek Domane SL 5, a carbon bike that isn't limited to tarmac. Who is it for?

For the cyclist who alternates between road and gravel tracks around the Étang de Thau, the rider heading off for a weekend of light bikepacking, or anyone who wants an adaptable bike. It also suits the rider torn between a road bike and a gravel bike who doesn't want to give up the road.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Behind the OCLV acronym lies an in-house process launched by Trek in 1992: each part is put under pressure and then cured to drive out the air trapped between the plies, the main source of weakness in carbon. The number that goes with the name (500, 900) tells you how refined the layup is; the higher it goes, the fewer fibres the frame needs for equivalent stiffness. These frames are covered by a Trek lifetime warranty.

For a versatile bike, the toughness of OCLV 500 matters more than weight: you load up a bag, ride on tracks, and the frame doesn't complain.

The bag mounts built into the frame let you carry a frame bag or top tube bag without straps. With 38 to 40 mm tyres, it rolls along the fast tracks of the Minervois while staying at ease on tarmac.

It is also a bike that evolves: carbon wheels, wider tyres or mudguards for winter, we adapt the set-up in the workshop. The UDH hanger and threaded T47 bottom bracket make this kind of job simpler.

Our take: as an all-rounder, the SL 5 offers the same frame platform as the SL 6 and SL 7, for 200 g and 700 g more. For tracks with more climbing, the SL 7 AXS 1x and its 10-46 are better suited.

LVR sizing advice

For mixed road and track use, a fairly compact size will give you more control on the trails. Cranks, handlebar and stem follow each size.
