For the cyclist who likes to get off the main roads: small vineyard lanes, coarse surfaces, stretches of gravel track between villages. It is also for those torn between this and a gravel bike who ride mainly on the road and want to keep a light, fast bike.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Since 1992, Trek has made its OCLV carbon frames by compacting the fibre sheets under heat and pressure, to eliminate the micro-voids where weaknesses begin. The number after the name reflects how refined the layup is: a high number means less material is needed to achieve the same stiffness. The 900 of the Domane SLR is the top of this scale, covered like all OCLV frames by the Trek lifetime warranty.
| OCLV 900 (Domane SLR) | OCLV 500 (Domane SL) | |
| Level | Trek's most advanced carbon | Entry-level road carbon |
| Construction | Rigid 3D moulding, reduced fibre overlaps | Same process, layup with more material |
| Gen 5 Domane frame | approx. 835 g (unpainted, ML), fork 367 g | approx. 1,055 g (unpainted, ML) |
| What it means | About 220 g less; up to 20 % stronger than the previous OCLV 800 | Tough frame, slightly heavier, more affordable |
In practice, compared with the Domane SL and its OCLV 500, the SLR saves about 220 g on the frame alone thanks to a stiffer 3D moulding that limits fibre overlaps, while also gaining strength. On an endurance bike, those grams are felt mainly when accelerating and on long climbs, not on the flat.
The frame accepts tyres up to 40 mm without mudguards. The stock 35 mm Kwaremont RSL tyres are enough on most broken roads; for more regular gravel paths, we are happy to fit 38 or 40 mm. Once set up tubeless, they can run at lower pressure and resist punctures better.
On the roads of the Minervois and around the vineyards, dust and gravel put the mechanics to the test. The threaded T47 bottom bracket is easy to remove for cleaning, the UDH hanger can be replaced in a few minutes after a knock, and the internal cables stay protected. Regular servicing in the workshop keeps the Di2 drivetrain precise.
| Model | Carbon | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (ML) |
| Domane SL 6 AXS | OCLV 500 | SRAM Rival AXS wireless | Carbon 50 mm | 8.64 kg |
| Domane SLR 7 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Ultegra Di2 | Carbon 51 mm | 7.66 kg |
| Domane SLR 7 AXS | OCLV 900 | SRAM Force AXS + power meter | Carbon 51 mm | 7.73 kg |
| Domane SLR 9 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 | RSL carbon 51 mm | 7.34 kg |
Our take: if you often ride off tarmac, the SLR 7 offers the same tyre clearance as the SL 6 AXS for 980 g less. Beyond a few kilometres of gravel per ride, a Checkpoint gravel bike is still better suited.

LVR sizing advice For riding on rough roads, don't go too big: a well-sized bike is easier to handle when the surface deteriorates.
Source: Trek size guide. Bike fitting available in our Béziers shop. |
| Riding on gravel tracks? | Yes on fast tracks, ideally with 38 to 40 mm tyres. |
| Is the matt finish delicate? | It needs gentle cleaning, with no polishing product or abrasive brush. |
| And if I crash on the derailleur side? | The standard UDH hanger is quick to replace, and we keep them in the workshop. |
| Would a gravel bike be better? | Only if you ride mainly on tracks; on the road, the Domane remains faster. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict A top-end Domane that takes bad roads in its stride without losing its lightness. The one we suggest to the curious rider who wants to get off the beaten track without buying a second bike.
