Trek Domane SL 6 AXS: carbon endurance, wireless

The Trek Domane SL 6 AXS Gen 5 is an OCLV Series 500 carbon endurance road bike, equipped with the wireless SRAM Rival AXS 2x12 drivetrain and Bontrager Aeolus Elite 50 carbon wheels, for a weight of 8.64 kg in size ML. A less aggressive position than a race bike, 35 mm tyres and clearance up to 40 mm: it is made for comfortably stringing together long rides, without giving up speed.

Who is it for?

For the sportive rider who often rides for more than three hours, the club rider preparing for a long-distance event, or someone returning to road cycling who wants an accessible position. Its wide tyres also let it tackle rough roads and some fast gravel tracks.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Trek has been developing its OCLV carbon since 1992: the fibre layers are compacted under heat and pressure to drive out the micro-voids that weaken a frame. The series number indicates how optimised the layup is: the higher it is, the less material is needed to achieve the same stiffness and strength. OCLV carbon frames benefit from the Trek lifetime warranty.

Gen 5 Domane frameapprox. 1,055 gapprox. 835 g (unpainted, size ML)
What it meansTough, comfortable frame, more affordable priceAbout 220 g less on the frame; up to 20 % stronger than the previous OCLV 800

Put simply: OCLV 500 is not a "budget" carbon. It relies on the same manufacturing process, with a slightly heavier frame. With OCLV 900 you mainly pay for grams saved, which matters to a climber or racer, far less to an endurance sportive rider.

This Gen 5 drops IsoSpeed: comfort now comes from the 35 mm tyres and the round carbon seatpost that flexes over bumps. The frame is lighter and no longer has any moving parts to maintain. The threaded T47 bottom bracket is a real plus in the workshop: it doesn't creak and is easy to remove.

The 48/35 and 10-36 combination is easier than the classic 50/34 and 11-34: you can get over the cols of the hinterland and the steep walls of the Montagne Noire without going into the red. The 50 mm carbon wheels, rare at this level of the range, hold their speed on the flat; the only drawback is that they catch the tramontane a little in strong crosswinds.

Which Domane should you choose?

Our take: compared with the SL 5, the SL 6 AXS brings wireless shifting and carbon wheels, and saves 200 g. To get under 8 kg, you need the OCLV 900 carbon of the SLR 7.

LVR sizing advice

Between two sizes: the smaller one for an upright position, the larger one if you have long legs. Cranks, handlebar and stem are matched to each size.

Your questions

Built for racing?Yes for sportives. For pure racing, the Madone offers a lower position.
Riding on tracks? On fast tracks, yes, with 38 to 40 mm tyres. Beyond that, choose a Checkpoint gravel bike.
Mudguards for winter?Yes, mounts provided; maximum tyre width then drops to 35 mm.
Charging the drivetrain?Yes, now and then: SRAM AXS batteries come with their charger.

The LVR Cycles verdict

The most balanced Domane in the range: carbon frame, wireless shifting and 50 mm carbon wheels brought together on a single bike. The one we recommend to the sportive rider who wants a bike for several seasons without needing to upgrade it.

Pros
+ 50 mm carbon wheels at this level
+ Easy gearing in the mountains
+ Comfort of wide tyres
Cons
- 50 mm rims sensitive to wind
- 8.64 kg: not a featherweight
- Position too upright for racing
