For the cyclist who lives or holidays at the foot of the hills and ticks off the cols every weekend, from the Caroux to the Espinouse. It also suits less powerful riders who want to keep a supple pedalling style on steep gradients rather than forcing out of the saddle.
OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Trek launched its OCLV process in 1992: heat and pressure bond the carbon layers together while driving out the air left between them, a source of weak points. The higher the series number, the more optimised the fibre orientation and the less material the frame needs for equal stiffness. With the 900, the Domane SLR gets the brand's most advanced carbon, guaranteed for life by Trek.
| OCLV 900 (Domane SLR) | OCLV 500 (Domane SL) | |
| Level | Trek's most advanced carbon | Entry-level road carbon |
| Construction | Rigid 3D moulding, reduced fibre overlaps | Same process, layup with more material |
| Gen 5 Domane frame | approx. 835 g (unpainted, ML), fork 367 g | approx. 1,055 g (unpainted, ML) |
| What it means | About 220 g less; up to 20 % stronger than the previous OCLV 800 | Tough frame, slightly heavier, more affordable |
Compared with the OCLV 500 of the Domane SL, the SLR frame loses about 220 g and its 3D-mould construction reduces overlap zones, for increased strength. It is this saving that keeps the SLR 7 AXS under 7.8 kg despite an integrated power meter.
Gearing makes the difference in the mountains: the low 35x36 is easier than the 34x34 of the SLR 7 Ultegra Di2, and the 48x10 keeps a real top speed on descents. Combined with a 7.73 kg bike, it lets you climb seated, at a high cadence, on the steepest ramps of the Montagne Noire.
Descending a col puts the brakes to work: the 160 mm SRAM Paceline X rotors and hydraulic callipers keep a consistent bite. We recommend a bleed and pad check every spring. Finally, the integrated power meter helps you manage your effort on a long climb.
| Model | Carbon | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (ML) |
| Domane SL 7 AXS 1x | OCLV 500 | SRAM Force XPLR 1x13 + power meter | Carbon 51 mm | 8.14 kg |
| Domane SLR 7 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Ultegra Di2 | Carbon 51 mm | 7.66 kg |
| Domane SLR 7 AXS | OCLV 900 | SRAM Force AXS + power meter | Carbon 51 mm | 7.73 kg |
| Domane SLR 9 | OCLV 900 | Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 | RSL carbon 51 mm | 7.34 kg |
Our take: for the mountains, the SLR 7 AXS is the better equipped of the two SLR 7 bikes thanks to the 35x36, for just 70 g more. The SLR 9 takes off a further 390 g, a difference mainly useful to climbers chasing a time.

LVR sizing advice In the mountains, a slightly more upright position relieves your back on long climbs: if you are between two sizes, the smaller one with a suitable stem is often the right choice.

| Enough gearing for steep slopes? | Yes: the 35x36 is easier than the 34x34 of the Ultegra Di2 version. |
| Do the brakes hold up on col descents? | Yes, 160 mm hydraulic discs front and rear. |
| AXS batteries in the cold? | They hold up well; charge them before a big day at altitude. |
| Fitting 40 mm tyres? | Yes without mudguards, useful for rough mountain roads. |

The LVR Cycles verdict The Domane we recommend for the cols: light, very well geared and safe on descents. A bike that makes the mountains accessible without sacrificing the thrill.
