Domane SLR 7 AXS: travelling far, packing light

The Trek Domane SLR 7 AXS is an OCLV Series 900 carbon endurance bike equipped with wireless SRAM Force AXS 2x12 and Aeolus Pro 51 wheels, for 7.73 kg in size ML. Its Matte Deep Smoke finish, a dark smoky grey with a matt feel, stays discreet on the road and at the overnight stop. It is perfectly suited to fast multi-day touring.

Who is it for?

For the cyclist who dreams of lightly loaded self-supported trips: a weekend between Béziers and the Cévennes, a tour of the Haut-Languedoc, 120 km stages with a frame bag and a saddle bag. It will also appeal to anyone who wants a high-end bike with no visible cables, simple to live with day to day.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Trek launched its OCLV process in 1992: heat and pressure bond the carbon layers together while driving out the air left between them, a source of weak points. The higher the series number, the more optimised the fibre orientation and the less material the frame needs for equal stiffness. With the 900, the Domane SLR gets the brand's most advanced carbon, guaranteed for life by Trek.

Compared with the OCLV 500 of the Domane SL, the SLR frame loses about 220 g and its 3D-mould construction reduces overlap zones, for increased strength. It is this saving that keeps the SLR 7 AXS under 7.8 kg despite an integrated power meter.

The frame has bag and mudguard mounts and accepts tyres up to 40 mm: enough to equip it for roads of every quality. The wireless drivetrain has no outer cables to replace and no dust in the cables to worry about; only the AXS batteries need charging, which is easy at the overnight stop.

On a trip, the UDH hanger is invaluable: this standard is easy to find and can be changed without special tools after a crash. The 48/35 and 10-36 make up for the weight of the luggage on climbs. Before departure, we check bolt torques, tyre pressures and pad condition.

Our take: for touring, the SL 7 AXS 1x and its 10-46 are reassuring with heavy luggage, but the SLR 7 AXS is 410 g lighter and keeps finer gaps. If you travel light, the SLR 7 AXS remains our choice.
