The Trek Domane AL 2 Gen 4 is an endurance road bike with an Alpha Series 100 aluminium frame and a carbon fork, equipped with a Shimano Claris 2x8 groupset and disc brakes, for 10.35 kg in size 56. Its upright position and 32 mm tyres inspire confidence from the very first rides, without requiring a racer's flexibility. The Gloss Supernova colourway, a glossy brown set off with black, gives it a classier look than most entry-level bikes.

For someone buying their first proper road bike after years on a hybrid or city bike, who wants a serious frame without a big budget. It also suits the cyclist who wants to try Sunday rides in a small group before deciding whether to take the sport further.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. The Domane AL 2 is built on Alpha Series 100 aluminium, exactly the same frame as the Domane AL 4 and AL 5: the bike can therefore evolve with you, component by component. Trek pairs it with a full-carbon fork that lightens the front end, and the latest redesign took about 250 g off the frame and fork compared with the old disc-brake Domane AL. Internal cable routing, tapered head tube and 12 mm thru axles: these are standards found on much more expensive bikes.
| Alpha 100 (Domane AL) | Alpha 300 (Émonda ALR) | OCLV 500 carbon (Domane SL) | |
| Level | The Domane AL aluminium | Trek's lightest aluminium | Entry-level road carbon |
| Construction | Welded tubes, carbon fork, plenty of mounts | Invisible Weld technology, the look of a carbon frame | Layers compacted under heat and pressure |
| Reference bike | Domane AL 2: 10.35 kg (size 56) | Émonda ALR 5: 9.17 kg (size 56) | Domane SL 5 Gen 5: 8.84 kg (size ML) |
| What it means | Mudguards possible, versatility, sensible budget | Livelier and lighter, 28 mm tyres max | Lighter still, Trek lifetime warranty on the frame |
Put simply: Alpha 100 favours toughness and versatility over chasing grams. The Alpha 300 of the Émonda ALR lightens the bike but gives up mudguards, and the OCLV 500 carbon of the Domane SL only really becomes worthwhile for a cyclist who already rides a lot.
Claris 2x8 gets a bad press among purists, wrongly for a beginner: it is simple, tough and its wear parts are cheap. The 50/34 paired with an 11-32 cassette covers most flat roads and steady climbs; the gaps between sprockets are simply bigger than with 11 or 12 speeds.
The Tektro mechanical disc brakes work well in the rain and are adjusted by cable: we fine-tune them at the first service, once the pads have bedded in. On the Canal du Midi loop to the Fonserannes locks or towards the beaches of Valras, this bike quickly feels at home, and the Tubeless Ready rims will later let you ride with fewer punctures.
| Model | Material | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (size) |
| Domane AL 2 | Alpha 100 | Shimano Claris 2x8 | Paradigm 23 alloy | 10.35 kg (56) |
| Domane AL 4 | Alpha 100 | Shimano Tiagra 2x11 | Paradigm 23 alloy | 10.10 kg (56) |
| Domane AL 5 | Alpha 100 | Shimano 105 2x12 mechanical | Paradigm 23 alloy | 9.80 kg (56) |
| Domane SL 5 Gen 5 | OCLV 500 carbon | Shimano 105 mechanical | Aluminium | 8.84 kg (ML) |
Our take: the AL 2 is the entry point; the AL 4 saves 250 g and moves to 11 speeds, the AL 5 drops to 9.80 kg with 12-speed Shimano 105. For a first bike, the AL 2 is enough if your budget is tight.

LVR sizing advice Between two sizes, take the smaller one if you are a beginner: the position will be more compact and reassuring. Handlebar and stem grow with the frame.
