The Trek Domane AL 5 Gen 4 is the most refined of the aluminium Domane bikes: Alpha Series 100 frame, carbon fork and 12-speed Shimano 105, for 9.80 kg in size 56. It offers the benchmark drivetrain of mid-range carbon bikes while keeping the toughness and versatility of aluminium. The Gloss Supernova colourway, a glossy brown edged with black, nicely highlights the lines of the frame.

For the cyclist preparing for their first sportive who wants precise shifting without moving to carbon, the athlete who already rides regularly and is looking for a durable bike, or the rider who wants a single bike for summer and winter. It is for those who want the right groupset first, and a light frame later.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. The Domane AL 5 frame is the same Alpha Series 100 as on the AL 2 and AL 4: the equipment makes the difference, with 550 g less than the AL 2 in size 56. Trek has paid attention to what makes life easier: cable housing integrated into the frame, full-carbon fork, mudguard eyelets front and rear and a UDH hanger. Together they form a sound base you keep for a long time, simply upgrading wheels and tyres.
| Alpha 100 (Domane AL) | Alpha 300 (Émonda ALR) | OCLV 500 carbon (Domane SL) | |
| Level | The Domane AL aluminium | Trek's lightest aluminium | Entry-level road carbon |
| Construction | Welded tubes, carbon fork, plenty of mounts | Invisible Weld technology, the look of a carbon frame | Layers compacted under heat and pressure |
| Reference bike | Domane AL 5: 9.80 kg (size 56) | Émonda ALR 5: 9.17 kg (size 56) | Domane SL 5 Gen 5: 8.84 kg (size ML) |
| What it means | Mudguards possible, versatility, sensible budget | Livelier and lighter, 28 mm tyres max | Lighter still, Trek lifetime warranty on the frame |
Key point: the Alpha 300 of the Émonda ALR isn't aimed at the same use; it sacrifices versatility for 630 g less in size 56. The OCLV 500 carbon of the Domane SL 5 drops to 8.84 kg in size ML with the same 105 groupset: it is up to you to judge whether the difference justifies the jump.
The 12-speed Shimano 105 R7100 offers an 11-34 range with no gaps in the gearing: you keep the right cadence on the flat as on the climbs. The Bontrager sealed-bearing hubs and CL700 Centerlock rotors are also a real step up from the AL 2 and AL 4: less maintenance and easier removal.
On a regional sportive route, between the climbs of the Montagne Noire and the long windswept stretches of the Minervois, this Domane offers the right compromise between comfort and precision. In the workshop, 105 is easy to adjust and its parts are available everywhere, which guarantees maintenance with no nasty surprises.
| Model | Material | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (size) |
| Domane AL 4 | Alpha 100 | Shimano Tiagra 2x11 | Paradigm 23 alloy | 10.10 kg (56) |
| Domane AL 5 | Alpha 100 | Shimano 105 2x12 mechanical | Paradigm 23 alloy | 9.80 kg (56) |
| Émonda ALR 5 | Alpha 300 | Shimano 105 2x12 mechanical | n/a | 9.17 kg (56) |
| Domane SL 5 Gen 5 | OCLV 500 carbon | Shimano 105 mechanical | Aluminium | 8.84 kg (ML) |
Our take: the AL 5 weighs 300 g less than the AL 4 and moves to 12-speed 105; the Émonda ALR 5 saves another 630 g with the same groupset but gives up mudguards, and the carbon Domane SL 5 drops to 8.84 kg in size ML.

LVR sizing advice The 105 and its 160 to 170 mm cranks follow your build; between two sizes, the larger one suits you if you are aiming for long distances with a more stretched-out position.

| More durable hubs? | Yes, sealed bearings stand up better to rain and dust. |
| Mechanical or electronic 105? | Mechanical here: simple adjustment, no battery to charge. |

The LVR Cycles verdict The alloy Domane that makes almost no compromise on the drivetrain. The one we recommend to the cyclist who wants 105 without exceeding their budget.
