Trek Domane AL 5 matte black: the winter bike for the demanding cyclist

The Trek Domane AL 5 Gen 4 gives riders who already own a carbon bike a second bike that is up to the job: Alpha Series 100 aluminium frame, carbon fork, Shimano 105 2x12 and 9.80 kg in size 56. With its mudguard mounts, it takes over as soon as the road gets wet, with a feel close to a summer bike. In Matte Dark Star Black, an elegant matt black, it has the look of a serious training bike.

Who is it for?

For the experienced cyclist who owns a carbon bike and wants to spare it the winter, the racer who wants the same shifting in training as in races, or the rider who piles on the kilometres from November to March. It also suits cyclists who want a single bike all year round.

Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. The Domane AL 5 frame is the same Alpha Series 100 as on the AL 2 and AL 4: the equipment makes the difference, with 550 g less than the AL 2 in size 56. Trek has paid attention to what makes life easier: cable housing integrated into the frame, full-carbon fork, mudguard eyelets front and rear and a UDH hanger. Together they form a sound base you keep for a long time, simply upgrading wheels and tyres.

Key point: the Alpha 300 of the Émonda ALR isn't aimed at the same use; it sacrifices versatility for 630 g less in size 56. The OCLV 500 carbon of the Domane SL 5 drops to 8.84 kg in size ML with the same 105 groupset: it is up to you to judge whether the difference justifies the jump.

Keeping the same groupset as your main bike is a real comfort: the 12-speed 105 gives you the same feel as a carbon bike equipped with 105 or Ultegra. The sealed-bearing hubs and Centerlock rotors stand up to water and mud better than cup-and-cone hubs, which reduces trips to the workshop.

Chilly mornings on the road to Lamalou-les-Bains or midweek rides in the tramontane call for a stable, reliable bike: with mudguards and 32 mm tyres, the Domane AL 5 holds the road. We recommend checking the pads more often in winter and cleaning the drivetrain after every wet ride.

Our take: as a winter bike, the AL 5 keeps the 105 of your main bike for 300 g less than the AL 4; the lighter Émonda ALR 5 has no provision for mudguards and doesn't accept tyres beyond 28 mm.

LVR sizing advice

The 105 and its 160 to 170 mm cranks follow your build; between two sizes, the larger one suits you if you are aiming for long distances with a more stretched-out position.
