For the all-round mountain biker who wants one bike to do it all: Sunday loops, long rides with plenty of climbing and moderately technical descents. It is also a very good choice for anyone taking part in regional marathon events without chasing the clock at all costs.
Alpha Platinum aluminium, at the heart of the Top Fuel 8. The Gen 4 Top Fuel comes in carbon and aluminium on the same design. This Top Fuel 8 uses Alpha Platinum, Trek's high-end aluminium, with internal storage, a four-position Mino Link and the ABP pivot that keeps the suspension active under braking.
| Alpha Platinum (this bike) | OCLV Mountain (Top Fuel 9.x) | Alpha Silver (Marlin) | |
| Level | Trek's high-end aluminium | Trek's mountain bike carbon | Entry-level aluminium |
| Construction | Hydroformed tubes, smoothed welds | OCLV layup reinforced against impacts | Simpler tubes, hardtails |
| Reference bike | Top Fuel 8: 14.58 kg (M) | Top Fuel 9.8 XT Di2: 14.00 kg (M) | Marlin (hardtail) |
| What it means | The right balance of strength and weight | Less weight, frame with lifetime warranty | No rear suspension |
Put simply: only 580 g separate this Top Fuel 8 from the carbon 9.8 XT Di2. For a rider who mainly rides for fun, it is the easiest gap to accept in the range.
The three-position Fox Float DPS shock is a real asset on this type of bike: open for descents, middle for flowing trails, firm for long fire-road climbs. Combined with the ABP pivot, which keeps the suspension active under braking, it makes the Top Fuel 8 very stable on rough garrigue descents.
Four-piston Shimano brakes are rare at this level of the range; they make all the difference on the long descents of the Caroux, where lighter brakes heat up quickly. The four-position Mino Link lets you adjust the geometry, and we make that change in the workshop if you wish.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Top Fuel 5 (Gen 3) | Alpha Platinum alloy | 120 / 130 mm | Shimano Deore 1x12 | 15.60 kg |
| Top Fuel 8 | Alpha Platinum alloy | 120 / 130 mm | Shimano SLX/XT 1x12 | 14.58 kg |
| Top Fuel 8 Eagle 70 | Alpha Platinum alloy | 130 / 140 mm | SRAM Eagle 70 T-Type 1x12 | 14.88 kg |
| Top Fuel 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 120 / 130 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | 14.00 kg |
Our take: at 14.58 kg, it is only 580 g heavier than the carbon Top Fuel 9.8 XT Di2. The Eagle 70 version of the Top Fuel 8 gains 10 mm at the front (140 mm) for 300 g more.
