Torn between mechanical XT and XT Di2 and wondering whether electronics are worth the investment? This Fuel is for you, especially if you ride often and are tired of hesitant shifts.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. The Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 pairs Shimano's electronic groupset with Trek's most advanced aluminium, Alpha NEXT Platinum, the top tier above Alpha Platinum and Alpha Silver. The frame retains all the Gen 7 options: adjustable progression, geometry changes via interchangeable parts, a down tube storage hatch, a ZS headset and an easy-to-maintain threaded BSA bottom bracket.
| Alpha Silver | Alpha NEXT Platinum | OCLV Mountain | |
| Level | Trek's entry-level alloy | The most refined of the Alpha alloys | Trek's mountain bike carbon |
| Construction | Alpha aluminium, hardtail frame | Alpha aluminium, adjustable Fuel platform | OCLV process tuned for impacts |
| Reference bike | Marlin 4 to 7 | Fuel EX 5, 8 and 9 | Fuel EX 9.8 and 9.9 |
| What it means | Simple and affordable, no rear suspension | 4.95 kg frameset in M, tough and more affordable | 3.31 kg frameset in M, 1.64 kg less |
In short: the Di2 version weighs 16.88 kg in M, 260 g less than the mechanical Fuel EX 9 XT, with identical suspension and brakes. The aluminium frame remains 1.64 kg heavier than the carbon kit, but it gives you electronics without moving to carbon.
Compared with mechanical XT, Di2 brings consistent precision: every shift is identical, however dirty or worn the housing. On the other hand, you have to remember to charge it and visit the workshop for diagnostics if there is an electronic issue.
The 260 g saving is barely noticeable on the trail, but the consistency of shifting is obvious from your first technical ride. We help you get to grips with it and adapt the shifter configuration to your riding style.
| Model | Frame | Fork / rear | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 17.14 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | 16.88 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 X0 AXS | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM X0 AXS T-Type 1x12 | not disclosed |
| Fuel EX 9.8 XT | OCLV Mountain carbon | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 15.28 kg |
Our take: with identical Fox Factory suspension, the mechanical Fuel EX 9 XT weighs 17.14 kg in M. For SRAM wireless, the Fuel EX 9 X0 AXS comes with RockShox Ultimate suspension.

LVR sizing advice If you are between two sizes, go for the smaller if your trails are slow and technical, the larger if you prioritise speed and stability. Post travel follows frame size; the S gets a 27.5-inch rear wheel to keep clearance.
