An enduro bike for tall, heavy riders looking for a frame that does not flex and brakes capable of slowing a heavy load on steep slopes. It also suits powerful mountain bikers who are hard on their kit.
The Fuel frame in its top-end alloy version. Alpha NEXT Platinum sits at the top of Trek's mountain bike alloy hierarchy, ahead of the Alpha Platinum of the Slash 8 and the Alpha Silver of the Marlin. For a bike exposed to repeated impacts, it is a logical choice. It gets most of the carbon frame's features: progression adjustment, interchangeable rocker link and lower shock mount, ABP pivot, down tube protection and transport protection for bike racks.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel LX 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel LX 9.8) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best MTB aluminium, reserved for Gen 7 Fuels | Trek's mountain bike carbon | Aluminium from the range above |
| Construction | Alloy engineered for strength, highly adjustable frame | OCLV layup tuned for impact resistance | Tough alloy, simpler kinematics |
| Reference bike | Gen 7 alloy Fuel EX frameset: 4.95 kg (M) | Gen 7 carbon Fuel EX frameset: 3.31 kg (M) | Complete Slash 8: 16.68 kg (M) |
| What it means | Takes knocks, more affordable | About 1.6 kg less on the frameset | 170 mm alloy enduro, less adjustable |
Put simply: aluminium remains the most rational material here for a rider who rides hard and often. It adds weight, around 1.6 kg on the frameset according to Trek, but it takes a season of rough trails without flinching.
The heavier the rider, the harder the brakes work. The four-piston Shimano XT M8220 brakes with a 203 mm front rotor dissipate heat better than a 180 mm rotor. On the long descents of the Montagne Noire, this stops the lever's bite point from shifting towards the bottom of the slope.
The Fox 38 fork, with its 38 mm stanchions, offers great steering stiffness, much appreciated by a heavy rider leaning into corners. At the rear, the DHX2 spring is chosen according to weight; we select it to get the right sag from the very first ride.
| Model | Frame | Drivetrain | Travel rear / front | Weight (M) |
| Fuel LX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical Shimano XT | 160 / 170 mm | 17.79 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 XT Di2 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 160 / 170 mm | n/a |
| Slash 8 | Alpha Platinum alloy | Mechanical Shimano XT | 170 / 170 mm | 16.68 kg |
| Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 160 / 170 mm | 15.97 kg |
Our take: for a tall rider, this LX 9 XT in XL offers a 200 mm dropper. The Slash 8 is lighter and more aggressive; the carbon Fuel LX models go up to XXL.

LVR sizing advice Four sizes from S to XL, for riders from 155 to 195 cm. On an enduro bike, if you are between two sizes, choose according to your trails: the smaller one turns better, the larger one is reassuring at speed.
Source: Trek size guide. Bike fitting available in our Béziers shop. |
| Is it suitable for a heavier rider? | Yes, the frame, fork and brakes are sized for enduro. |
| Which size above 188 cm? | The XL covers 188 to 195 cm. |
| Why a 203 mm rotor? | It dissipates heat better and keeps power consistent. |
| Is the matt red fragile? | It needs gentle cleaning; a protective film can be fitted. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict A stable, reassuring alloy Fuel LX for tall and powerful riders. The sienna red speckled with copper gives it character.
