The Alpha NEXT Platinum frame brings the total to 16.88 kg in M according to Trek. Matte Sedona Red/Pennyflake Splatter colourway: a matt brick red scattered with copper flecks.

Built for the weekend racer who takes part in regional raids and marathons on rough courses and wants a bike that is comfortable and precise over several hours of effort. It is aimed at riders who value consistency over outright lightness.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. The Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 pairs Shimano's electronic groupset with Trek's most advanced aluminium, Alpha NEXT Platinum, the top tier above Alpha Platinum and Alpha Silver. The frame retains all the Gen 7 options: adjustable progression, geometry changes via interchangeable parts, a down tube storage hatch, a ZS headset and an easy-to-maintain threaded BSA bottom bracket.
| Alpha Silver | Alpha NEXT Platinum | OCLV Mountain | |
| Level | Trek's entry-level alloy | The most refined of the Alpha alloys | Trek's mountain bike carbon |
| Construction | Alpha aluminium, hardtail frame | Alpha aluminium, adjustable Fuel platform | OCLV process tuned for impacts |
| Reference bike | Marlin 4 to 7 | Fuel EX 5, 8 and 9 | Fuel EX 9.8 and 9.9 |
| What it means | Simple and affordable, no rear suspension | 4.95 kg frameset in M, tough and more affordable | 3.31 kg frameset in M, 1.64 kg less |
In short: the Di2 version weighs 16.88 kg in M, 260 g less than the mechanical Fuel EX 9 XT, with identical suspension and brakes. The aluminium frame remains 1.64 kg heavier than the carbon kit, but it gives you electronics without moving to carbon.
On a raid lasting several hours, the consistent precision of Di2 avoids missed shifts when fatigue sets in. The 145 mm of rear travel limits muscle fatigue on rough courses, where a cross-country bike shakes you around more.
Before a raid, we check the drivetrain charge, tyre condition and brake bleed. The stock Maxxis Minion tyres prioritise grip; for a very fast-rolling raid, faster tyres may be worth considering.
| Model | Frame | Fork / rear | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9 XT | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 17.14 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT Di2 1x12 | 16.88 kg |
| Fuel EX 9 X0 AXS | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | RockShox Lyrik Ultimate, 150 / 145 mm | SRAM X0 AXS T-Type 1x12 | not disclosed |
| Fuel EX 9.8 XT | OCLV Mountain carbon | Fox Factory 36, 150 / 145 mm | Shimano XT 1x12 | 15.28 kg |
Our take: on a raid, every gram is paid for on the climbs: the carbon 9.8 XT version is 1.6 kg lighter than this model. Conversely, the cable-operated XT adds 260 g.

LVR sizing advice If you are between two sizes, go for the smaller if your trails are slow and technical, the larger if you prioritise speed and stability. Post travel follows frame size; the S gets a 27.5-inch rear wheel to keep clearance.

| Should I change the tyres for a raid? | On a fast-rolling raid, quicker tyres can save you time. |

The LVR Cycles verdict The Fuel EX 9 XT Di2 is an excellent raid companion on rough courses, with a drivetrain that is always precise and comfortable suspension. The Sedona red with copper flecks gives it a bold style.
