Who is it for?

For the experienced mountain biker who wants the best of the Fuel EX platform and rides enough to make the most of every upgrade: carbon wheels, fully wireless, highly adjustable suspension. It will suit the rider who wants a single high-end bike for all their trail rides.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. Since 1992, Trek has cured its fibres under pressure for void-free frames. The Mountain version reinforces the areas hit by rocks and landings. Frameset: 3.31 kg (M), with lifetime warranty.

Put simply: same frame as the 9.8 models; the 1.20 kg saving over the 9.8 XT comes down to the kit.

The SRAM X0 Eagle AXS T-Type drivetrain mounts directly on the wheel axle via the UDH hanger: no more bent derailleur hangers, and a derailleur designed to withstand knocks against rocks. Cable-free shifting stays perfectly consistent, even in the dust of the garrigue.

For stopping, the Maven Silver brakes bite hard with a single finger, and their reach can be adjusted for smaller hands. On the fast slopes around Lodève, you can brake later while keeping fine control.

Which Fuel should you choose?

Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2OCLV Mountain carbon160 / 170 mmWireless Shimano XT Di215.97 kg

Our take: the 9.9 X0 AXS is 1.20 kg lighter than the 9.8 XT, thanks to its spec. For more travel, the Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 moves up to 160 / 170 mm for 15.97 kg in M.

LVR sizing advice

If you are between two sizes, the smaller favours handling on technical trails, the larger composure when the terrain speeds up. The Reverb AXS goes from 150 mm in S to 200 mm from L, and size S uses a 27.5-inch rear wheel.

Your questions

Are the Maven brakes powerful?Very; the Silver version also lets you adjust the lever reach.
Is the T-Type derailleur strong?Yes, it mounts on the UDH hanger and resists impacts better.
How many batteries? Those of the derailleur and Reverb AXS post, plus the coin cells in the shifters.
Is the marbling unique? The pattern may vary slightly from one frame to another; that is the nature of a marbled finish.

The LVR Cycles verdict

The most accomplished Fuel EX, light at 14.08 kg in M and specced without any compromise. The teal marbled with light green suits this top-end model well.

Pros
+ Line Pro 30 carbon wheels
