The Trek Fuel LX 9.8 Eagle 90 Gen 7 is the most straightforward carbon Fuel LX: OCLV Mountain frame, 170 mm RockShox ZEB Ultimate fork, 160 mm Vivid Ultimate shock and mechanical SRAM Eagle 90 drivetrain. Trek does not publish its weight; for reference, the Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2, on the same carbon frame, weighs 15.97 kg in a size M. Its Miami Green / Aloha Marble paintwork pairs a bright Miami green with a marbling with turquoise tints.

It is aimed at the rider already on an alloy enduro bike who wants to move to carbon for lightness and liveliness, without going as far as an electronic drivetrain. It is an excellent choice for a first high-end bike.
OCLV Mountain carbon, Trek's mountain bike signature. OCLV is Trek's carbon process; its Mountain version is tuned for impact resistance rather than weight saving alone. The Fuel LX 9.8 benefits with a frame lighter than the Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy of the LX 9, the same adjustable kinematics, a UDH hanger and Trek's lifetime warranty on the frame.
| OCLV Mountain (Fuel LX 9.8) | Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel LX 9) | OCLV Mountain (Slash 9.8) | |
| Level | Trek's mountain bike carbon, lifetime warranty | Trek's best mountain bike aluminium | Same carbon, more aggressive bike |
| Construction | OCLV layup tuned to absorb impacts | Alloy engineered for strength | OCLV layup, 170 mm at the rear |
| Reference bike | Gen 7 carbon Fuel EX frameset: 3.31 kg (M) | Gen 7 alloy Fuel EX frameset: 4.95 kg (M) | Slash 9.8 XT Di2: 16.63 kg (M) |
| What it means | About 1.6 kg less on the frameset | Heavier, more affordable | More travel, less versatile |
Put simply: the 9.8 Eagle 90 is the most direct way to get a carbon Fuel LX. The drivetrain stays mechanical and robust; the weight is not published, but the 9.8 XT Di2 on the same frame weighs 15.97 kg in M.
Moving from alloy to carbon mainly changes the feel when accelerating and climbing: less mass to carry, livelier steering. OCLV Mountain carbon is still tuned for impacts, and Trek warrants the frame for life. The mechanical Eagle 90 drivetrain, simple and robust, keeps the budget on what matters: the frame and the suspension.
The RockShox Ultimate suspension is the same as on the alloy models in the series: ZEB with ButterCups to filter out vibrations, Vivid at the rear. It is set according to your weight, then with the rebound and compression dials; we do this with you at handover, then at the first service.
| Model | Frame | Drivetrain | Travel rear / front | Weight (M) |
| Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical SRAM Eagle 90 | 160 / 170 mm | 17.38 kg |
| Fuel LX 9.8 Eagle 90 | OCLV Mountain carbon | Mechanical SRAM Eagle 90 | 160 / 170 mm | n/a (reference 15.97 kg) |
| Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 160 / 170 mm | 15.97 kg |
| Slash 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 170 / 170 mm | 16.63 kg |
Our take: compared with the alloy LX 9 Eagle 90 (17.38 kg in M), this 9.8 Eagle 90 brings carbon with the same drivetrain. The LX 9.8 XT Di2 (15.97 kg) adds Di2 and Fox suspension; the Slash 9.8 XT Di2 moves to 170 mm.
