Trek Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 Miami Green: shifting under full load

The Trek Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 Gen 7 combines an OCLV Mountain carbon frame with the electronic Shimano XT Di2 1x12 drivetrain, a 170 mm Fox Factory 38 fork and a Fox DHX2 coil for 160 mm at the rear. On the scales, Trek claims 15.97 kg in a size M with tubeless sealant. The Miami Green/Aloha Marble colourway pairs an aqua green close to teal with a soft green marbling.

Who is it for?

For the mountain biker who loves technical climbs as much as descents, and wants to shift at the right moment even when pushing hard on the pedals. It suits riders looking for a light enduro bike to pedal back up their descents several times per ride.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV carbon, Trek's signature. For its mountain bikes, Trek adapts its OCLV process into a Mountain version: the fibres are oriented and reinforced where an enduro frame takes the hits, under the down tube and around the pivots. The result is a frame that is lighter than aluminium without being more fragile, covered by Trek's lifetime warranty. On the Gen 7 Fuel platform, the frame kit difference reaches 1.64 kg in size M according to Trek (3.31 kg versus 4.95 kg, measured on the Fuel EX).

In short: 15.97 kg in size M for a 160 / 170 mm coil-sprung bike is the lowest published weight in the whole Fuel LX family. Compared with the aluminium Fuel LX 9 XT, the 1.82 kg difference comes from the carbon frame but also from the Di2 drivetrain, which is lighter than the cable version.

On a rocky ramp, a missed shift costs you your balance. The XT Di2 M8250 derailleur is motorised: it shifts up or down a sprocket with the same precision whatever the chain tension, and the wireless shifter responds to a simple press of the thumb, with no lever effort.

With no derailleur cable, there is no more housing filling up with garrigue dust and no adjustment to redo after a few weeks. The 10-51 cassette and 30-tooth chainring stay the same as on the mechanical version: the gain is in precision, not gearing.

Our take: at 15.97 kg in M, this 9.8 XT Di2 is 940 g lighter than the alloy Fuel MX 9 XT, which only offers 150/160 mm. The Slash 9.8 XT Di2 weighs 16.63 kg and gains 10 mm at the rear.

LVR sizing advice

The Fuel LX is chosen first according to the rider's height: between two sizes, the smaller one makes the bike more playful in hairpins, the larger one more stable at high speed. Dropper post travel increases with size.

Can the buttons be programmed?Yes, via the Shimano app: we set it up with you in our workshop.
Does the Miami green show the dirt? Its light shade shows dust but cleans very easily with water.
