Trek Fuel MX 9 X0 AXS grey: wireless shifting at the service of your riding

The Trek Fuel MX 9 X0 AXS Gen 7 is the most complete build of the alloy Fuel MX range: wireless SRAM X0 Eagle AXS T-Type drivetrain, 170 mm RockShox ZEB Ultimate fork, Vivid Ultimate shock and 150 mm at the rear. Trek does not publish its weight; the Fuel MX 9 XT with the identical frame serves as a reference, at 16.91 kg in a size M. Its Lithium Grey / Trek Black Splatter colourway is a bright grey spotted with black.

Who is it for?

For the demanding mountain biker who wants instant shifts even under full load, and no longer wants to adjust cables. It will suit the rider who rides a lot, looks after their bike carefully and wants top-end kit without moving to carbon.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha NEXT Platinum: first-rate alloy for a top-end build. The Fuel MX 9 X0 AXS combines Trek's most advanced aluminium, above Alpha Silver and Alpha Platinum, with the plushest spec of the alloy Fuel MX range. Trek has not published the weight of this version; the closest reference remains the Fuel MX 9 XT, which shares the same frame, at 16.91 kg in a size M. To put the material in context, the alloy Gen 7 Fuel EX frameset weighs 4.95 kg in M, the carbon version 3.31 kg.

Put simply: you invest in the components (electronic drivetrain, RockShox Ultimate suspension, Maven Silver brakes) rather than in carbon. For a rider who breaks derailleurs more often than uphill time records, it is a very sensible way to spend the budget.

The X0 Eagle AXS T-Type drivetrain mounts directly on the rear axle, with no conventional derailleur hanger: it copes far better with rock strikes. With no cable, nothing gets clogged in a housing, and the derailleur shifts under load without hesitation, which is a game changer on steep accelerations.

For braking, the four-piston Maven Silver brakes deliver considerable power and good consistency on long descents. With the stiff, precise ZEB and the Vivid, this package is that of an enduro bike, fitted to a frame with a livelier character.

Which Fuel should you choose?

Our take: compared with the RockShox MX 9 Eagle 90 (16.78 kg), the X0 AXS changes neither frame nor suspension: it brings wireless shifting and Maven Silver brakes. The MX 9 XT, at 16.91 kg, remains the mechanical Shimano option.

LVR sizing advice

To help you decide: the smaller size if you want a lively bike to jump and place, the larger one if you mostly ride fast on open tracks. The Line Dropper goes from 150 mm in S to 200 mm in L and XL.

Your questions

What battery life?It depends on use; the AXS battery is recharged with the supplied charger.
More fragile than a cable derailleur? No, mounting it directly on the axle actually makes it more impact-resistant.
Why no claimed weight?Trek has not published it; the MX 9 XT with the same frame weighs 16.91 kg in M.
Does the grey get dirty quickly? The black speckles hide dust well between washes.

The LVR Cycles verdict

The alloy Fuel MX that makes no compromise on components: wireless drivetrain, Ultimate suspension and powerful brakes. Its grey spotted with black knows how to stay discreet.
