For the mountain biker who rides hard on rocky terrain and has already broken a derailleur hanger or two. They want a robust drivetrain, precise under load, and a high-end bike capable of lasting several seasons.
OCLV Mountain carbon, Trek's signature. At the top of the Fuel MX range, the 9.9 X0 AXS keeps the OCLV Mountain carbon frame of the 9.8: a mountain bike carbon compacted under heat and pressure, with fibres laid out to withstand repeated impacts rather than break lightness records. What sets it apart is the kit fitted around it: carbon wheels, carbon handlebar and wireless electronics. Trek lifetime warranty on the frame.
| OCLV Mountain (Fuel MX 9.8 / 9.9) | Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel MX 9) | Carbon Fuel EX / LX | |
| Level | Trek's mountain bike carbon, tuned for impacts | Trek's most advanced aluminium | Same Gen 7 Fuel platform |
| Construction | Plies compacted under heat and pressure | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Identical OCLV Mountain carbon |
| Gen 7 Fuel frameset (M) | 3.31 kg (Fuel EX figure) | 4.95 kg (Fuel EX figure) | 3.31 kg for the EX |
| What it means | Around 1.6 kg less on the frame, lifetime warranty | Heavier, gentler on the budget | 145 / 150 mm (EX) or 160 / 170 mm (LX) |
Put simply: on a 9.9, it is no longer the frame that makes the difference but the parts that complete it. The Line Pro 30 carbon wheels and the Race Face ERA cockpit reduce rotating mass and weight up front, which you feel above all when changing direction and accelerating.
The X0 Eagle AXS T-Type derailleur mounts directly on the UDH hanger, with no intermediate part: it copes far better with a rock strike and its adjustment does not drift. Shifts happen under full load, and the XS-1295 10-52 cassette offers a very easy sprocket for the steepest climbs.
The Trek Aeolus Pro saddle with carbon rails and AirLoom structure, and the 800 mm Race Face ERA carbon handlebar complete a high-end cockpit. The handlebar can be cut down if you prefer it narrower: we adjust its width, the height of the 40 mm stem and the lever position to your build.
| Model | Frame | Travel rear / front | Drivetrain | Weight (M) |
| Fuel EX 9.9 X0 AXS | OCLV Mountain carbon | 145 / 150 mm | Wireless SRAM X0 AXS | 14.08 kg |
| Fuel MX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 150 / 160 mm | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | not disclosed |
| Fuel MX 9.9 X0 AXS | OCLV Mountain carbon | 150 / 170 mm | Wireless SRAM X0 AXS | not published |
| Fuel LX 9.8 XT Di2 | OCLV Mountain carbon | 160 / 170 mm | Wireless Shimano XT Di2 | 15.97 kg |
Our take: compared with the Fuel MX 9.8 XT Di2, this 9.9 X0 AXS brings the 170 mm fork, carbon wheels and handlebar. It shares its RockShox suspension with the MX 9.8 Eagle 90; the Fuel EX 9.9 X0 AXS (14.08 kg in M) remains the trail version, at 145/150 mm.

| Is the UDH hanger strong? | Yes, and it is universal: most shops stock it in case of breakage. |
| Does the derailleur need charging? | Yes, from time to time: SRAM AXS battery supplied with its charger. |
| Can the handlebar be cut down? | Yes, the 800 mm Race Face ERA can be cut; we do it to your width. |
| Is the glossy carmine fragile? | Like any gloss paint; a protective film fitted in our workshop preserves the frame. |

The LVR Cycles verdict The high-end Fuel MX for those who ride hard on rough terrain, with a very robust T-Type drivetrain. The glossy carmine red and matte black give it a look that is both understated and luxurious.
