It is aimed at the rider coming from a 140 or 150 mm trail bike who feels they are reaching the limits of their bike on steep sections. It lets you step up a level on the descents without changing how you ride, and also suits smaller or taller riders thanks to its four sizes.
An alloy frame that adjusts like a race frame. The Fuel LX 9 is built on Alpha NEXT Platinum aluminium, the highest grade of Trek's mountain bike alloys (above Alpha Platinum and Alpha Silver). What sets it apart is the kinematics: the progression can be changed, the rocker link and lower shock mount can be swapped, and the ABP pivot on the rear axle keeps the suspension working under braking.
| Alpha NEXT Platinum (Fuel LX 9) | OCLV Mountain (Fuel LX 9.8) | Alpha Platinum (Slash 8) | |
| Level | Trek's best MTB aluminium, reserved for Gen 7 Fuels | Trek's mountain bike carbon | Aluminium from the range above |
| Construction | Alloy engineered for strength, highly adjustable frame | OCLV layup tuned for impact resistance | Tough alloy, simpler kinematics |
| Reference bike | Gen 7 alloy Fuel EX frameset: 4.95 kg (M) | Gen 7 carbon Fuel EX frameset: 3.31 kg (M) | Complete Slash 8: 16.68 kg (M) |
| What it means | Takes knocks, more affordable | About 1.6 kg less on the frameset | 170 mm alloy enduro, less adjustable |
Put simply: this frame adapts to your riding instead of imposing its own. It is heavier than the OCLV Mountain carbon of the 9.8, but it is more forgiving of impacts and easier to repair.
The ZEB Ultimate fork gets a Linear XL spring and ButterCups, small elastomer elements that filter out fine vibrations before they reach your hands. The Charger 3.2 RC2 damper adjusts rebound and compression. On the garrigue trails around Béziers, littered with small stones, that adds up to much less fatigue after two hours.
The Vivid Ultimate shock, in a 205 x 65 mm size, handles the 160 mm at the rear. Its base setting depends on your weight and riding style: it is the first thing to adjust when a new rider takes the bike. We carry out this set-up and show you how to check it yourself.
| Model | Frame | Drivetrain | Travel rear / front | Weight (M) |
| Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical SRAM Eagle 90 | 150 / 160 mm | 16.78 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 Eagle 90 | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Mechanical SRAM Eagle 90 | 160 / 170 mm | 17.38 kg |
| Fuel LX 9 X0 AXS | Alpha NEXT Platinum alloy | Wireless SRAM X0 AXS | 160 / 170 mm | n/a |
| Slash 8 | Alpha Platinum alloy | Mechanical Shimano XT | 170 / 170 mm | 16.68 kg |
Our take: the LX 9 Eagle 90 gains 10 mm at each end over the Fuel MX 9 Eagle 90 for 600 g more. The LX 9 X0 AXS keeps the same frame with a wireless drivetrain; the Slash 8 moves to 170 mm at the rear.

| What are ButterCups for? | They filter out small vibrations to ease the strain on your hands on rough terrain. |
| Is my current trail bike enough? | If you are looking for more margin on the descents, this Fuel LX offers considerably more. |

The LVR Cycles verdict A great step up from trail to enduro, with top-end RockShox suspension that is easy to set up. The grey speckled with black stays smart after many rides.
