For the cyclist buying a first serious gravel bike who wants to be able to upgrade it over the years: lighter wheels, wireless drivetrain, wider tyres. It also suits those torn between aluminium and carbon who prefer to invest step by step.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. With its Alpha range, Trek works aluminium with the same rigour as carbon, and the 300 Series is the top of the pile. Hydroforming sculpts each tube according to the stresses it undergoes, avoiding extra material where it serves no purpose, and the welds are finely finished. The Checkpoint ALR 5 benefits from this: a 1,878 g painted frame in M, internal cables, T47 bottom bracket and UDH hanger.
| Alpha 300 (Checkpoint ALR) | OCLV 500 (Checkpoint SL) | OCLV 800 (Checkmate SLR) | |
| Level | The pinnacle of Trek aluminium | Entry OCLV carbon | Carbon of the race Checkmate |
| Construction | Precise hydroforming | OCLV, thicker lay-up | OCLV, optimised lay-up |
| Frame (painted) | 1,878 g, size M | 1,385 g, size ML | 1,146 g, size ML |
| What it means | The lightest aluminium Checkpoint | Hatch, IsoSpeed, wireless on the SL 5 | Maximum efficiency, less versatile |
In short: the ALR 5 is the lightest aluminium bike in the range, 9.87 kg in ML with a tubeless set-up, and only 370 g more than the carbon Checkpoint SL 5 AXS. The difference comes down to IsoSpeed, the storage hatch and wireless shifting, which the ALR does not have.
The UDH hanger, a universal derailleur standard, makes life easier: after a crash, a replacement part is easy to find, and the frame accepts the latest direct-mount drivetrains. The threaded T47 bottom bracket is known for being quiet and durable, and can be replaced without risk of damaging the frame.
The first upgrade to consider is the wheels: carbon rims or lighter aluminium wheels transform the bike's responsiveness. The 50 mm tyre clearance also leaves the door open to more adventurous riding, towards the tracks of the Montagne Noire or the trails of the Passa Païs greenway.
| Model | Frame | Drivetrain | Wheels | Weight (ML) |
| Checkpoint ALR 3 | Alpha 300 alloy | Shimano CUES 1x10, mechanical brakes | Aluminium Paradigm 23 | 10.41 kg |
| Checkpoint ALR 4 | Alpha 300 alloy | Shimano CUES 1x11, hydraulic brakes | Aluminium Paradigm 23 | 10.40 kg |
| Checkpoint ALR 5 | Alpha 300 alloy | Mechanical SRAM Apex XPLR 1x12 | Aluminium Paradigm 23 | 9.87 kg |
| Checkpoint SL 5 AXS | OCLV 500 | Wireless SRAM Apex XPLR AXS 1x12 | Aluminium Paradigm SL | 9.50 kg |
Our take: the ALR 5 is the most upgradeable choice in the aluminium range, 530 g lighter than the ALR 4. The carbon SL 5 AXS starts from a higher-end base, but with a higher initial budget.

LVR sizing advice If you are between two sizes, the smaller one makes the bike livelier when accelerating, the larger one more settled on long tracks. Cranks go from 165 to 172.5 mm, and the handlebar and stem grow with the frame.
