Trek Procaliber 9.7 Carbon Red Smoke: the weapon for XC marathons

The Gen 3 Trek Procaliber 9.7 is the sharpest hardtail in the family: OCLV Mountain carbon with IsoBow, a SRAM GX Eagle AXS 1x12 10-52 wireless drivetrain, Kovee Elite 30 carbon wheels and four-piston SRAM Motive Bronze brakes, weighing 10.58 kg in size M according to Trek. This colour is offered in size ML. Carbon Red Smoke is a dark red with smoky highlights.

Who is it for?

For the marathon rider who covers 80 km or more on hilly courses, where lightness and seated comfort make the difference over the distance. According to Trek, this ML version suits riders from 173 to 180 cm.

The LVR workshop view

A carbon frame designed for XC racing. The Procaliber 9.7 shares the OCLV Mountain frame of the other carbon Procalibers: fibres compacted under high pressure and temperature, layup focused on impact resistance, Trek lifetime warranty. What sets it apart is the kit built around it: Kovee Elite 30 carbon wheels, a one-piece RSL bar-stem and wireless shifting. The IsoBow system, with seatstays that extend past the seat tube, adds controlled vertical flex that eases the back during long races.

What it meansLighter, rear end flexes over bumpsHeavier, no IsoBowVersatile, noticeably heavier

Put simply: this 9.7 is the lightest Procaliber in the range, at 10.58 kg in size M. It owes that to its carbon wheels, its Sainte-Anne RSL tyres with 220 tpi casing and its carbon bar-stem; with an identical frame, it saves 1.55 kg over the Procaliber 9.5 with Judy Gold fork.

In a marathon, fatigue builds up over the hours: IsoBow absorbs some of the vibration your back takes while seated, and the Verse Short Elite saddle with magnesium rails supports the pelvis well. The thick-foam ESI Chunky grips also reduce numbness in the hands.

The four-piston Motive Bronze brakes bring power and endurance on long descents, with 160 mm SRAM CenterLine rotors, a light format typical of cross-country. The 34-tooth GX Eagle chainset and 10-52 cassette offer tall gearing for the fast-rolling sections of a marathon.

Which Procaliber should you choose?

Supercaliber SL 9.7 (full suspension)OCLV MountainWireless SRAM GX AXS80 mm rear / 110 mm front12.18 kg

Our take: for a marathon, this 9.7 remains the lightest hardtail in the range. If you want more comfort at the rear, the Supercaliber SL 9.7 GX AXS adds 80 mm of travel for 1.60 kg more.

LVR sizing advice

The one-piece bar-stem cannot be changed as easily as a conventional stem: its length follows the size (70 mm from S to ML, 80 in L, 90 in XL). Between two sizes, we prefer to confirm the position in store before deciding.

Your questions

Only in ML?Yes, this colour is offered in ML; the navy blue covers S to XL.
AXS battery life?It lasts several long rides; charge it the day before a marathon.
Are the ESI grips comfortable?Yes, their thick foam damps vibration; they wear over time and are easy to replace.
Is the smoky red fragile?Clean it with a gentle cleaner; frame protection can be applied at rub points.

The LVR Cycles verdict

A Procaliber 9.7 designed for long distances, as light as it is enduring thanks to its four-piston brakes. Its smoky red gives it an intense, refined character.

Pros
+ Motive Bronze 4-piston brakes
+ Comfortable ESI Chunky grips
+ Refined smoky red
