Trek Marlin 5 Miami Green: from town to the garrigue tracks

Versatile by nature, the third-generation Trek Marlin 5 moves seamlessly from cycle paths to dirt tracks: an Alpha Silver aluminium frame ready for a rack and kickstand, a 100 mm Suntour XCT 30 fork with lockout, a Shimano CUES 1x9 drivetrain and 2.40-inch Montrose Comp tyres, for 15.10 kg in size M. Miami Green/Dark Aquatic Fade starts with a bright aqua green and fades into a dark petrol blue.

Who is it for?

For the urban cyclist who wants a bike that can escape onto Mediterranean tracks at the weekend, for the active retiree discovering mountain bike rides, or for a young adult looking for their first proper off-road bike. It suits rides of one to three hours over varied terrain.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. Under the Alpha name, Trek groups its aluminium alloys by level of finish. The Marlin 5 inherits Alpha Silver, built to last: thick tubes where impacts are concentrated, cables routed inside the frame so they do not rub, and routing already in place for a dropper seatpost. It is a frame that is happy to grow old with you.

What it meansTough, versatile, easy to maintainTakes a 140 mm forkTakes 4.50-inch tyres

In short: the Marlin 5 keeps the frame shared by the whole Marlin family and brings two real improvements over the Marlin 4: a ninth gear with a wider-range cassette, and a fork lockout, which is invaluable on the road. It weighs 200 g more than the Marlin 4 in size M, a difference you will not feel on the trail.

On the garrigue tracks around Béziers, the ground is often dry, dusty and strewn with loose stones. The 2.40-inch Montrose Comp tyres have enough volume to keep their grip, and the fork soaks up small steps. In town, the lockout turns the Marlin 5 into an efficient bike on tarmac.

The frame is ready for a dropper post thanks to its internal routing: a worthwhile upgrade if you get a taste for descending. We can fit one in the workshop when the time comes. This green-to-petrol-blue fade evokes the sea and stands out without being garish.

Which Marlin should you choose?

Marlin 7RockShox Judy Silver air, 100 mmSRAM NX Eagle 1x12 + dropper postMaxxis Rekon Tubeless Ready14.15 kg

Our take: for mixed town and track riding, the Marlin 5 is the best compromise in the range. The Marlin 6 and Marlin 7 add a dropper post; the Marlin 4 remains an option if budget comes first.

LVR sizing advice

In XS and S, the Marlin 5 rolls on 27.5-inch wheels with a lowered top tube that is easier to step over; from size M it moves to 29-inch wheels. If you are between two sizes, choose the smaller one if you are new to trails.

Your questions

Can I add a dropper post?Yes, the internal routing is built into the frame; we fit it in the workshop.
For what length of ride?It is very much at home on rides of one to three hours.
Are the tyres suitable for town?Yes, the Montrose roll well on tarmac while staying comfortable on tracks.
Is the fade the same over the whole frame? No, the colour shifts gradually from aqua green to petrol blue.

The LVR Cycles verdict

The most balanced Marlin for anyone who splits their time between town and tracks, with a frame that is ready to evolve. Its aqua green and petrol blue fade gives it a real freshness.
