For the mountain biker who already rides every week and wants a more capable bike uphill and downhill, for the rider taking part in organised rides on longer routes, or for a sporty teenager who is growing and improving fast. It suits rides of two to four hours over varied terrain.
Alpha aluminium, Trek's expertise. The Alpha Silver of the Marlin 6 is the same alloy as on the other Marlins, but this model makes better use of its potential: the dropper post routing built into the frame is used here as standard. Trek designed this third generation with a slacker head angle, which makes the bike calmer as the slope steepens.
| Marlin 6 (Alpha Silver) | Marlin 5 (Alpha Silver) | Procaliber 6 (Alpha Platinum) | |
| Positioning | First true trail Marlin | Versatile in town and on tracks | Cross-country hardtail |
| Key equipment | Dropper post, TLR rims | Fork with lockout, rigid post | Higher-grade aluminium |
| Fork | RockShox Judy, 100 mm | Suntour XCT 30, 100 mm | 120 mm |
| What it means | More relaxed descents | Cheaper, less versatile downhill | Livelier, more performance-oriented |
In short: the dropper post is the piece of equipment that most transforms a beginner's mountain biking experience. Being able to drop the saddle with a push at the bar before a descent saves you from stopping and builds confidence. The Marlin 6 is the first Marlin to offer it as standard.
The 11-48 cassette is one of the widest at this level of the range: the 48-tooth sprocket paired with the 30-tooth chainring lets you climb the Caroux tracks at a reasonable pace. The 10-speed CUES drivetrain shares LINKGLIDE technology, a guarantee of longevity, which keeps running costs down over time.
The RockShox Judy coil fork is easy to maintain and its TurnKey lockout is operated directly on the crown. We set its preload to your weight. On rough descents, combined with the dropper post, it gives you welcome confidence. This intense lava red goes well with the red earth of the Salagou.
| Model | Fork | Drivetrain | Wheels / tyres | Weight (M) |
| Marlin 4 | Suntour XCE 28, 100 mm | Shimano ESSA 1x8 | 29 x 2.40 in (inner tube) | 14.90 kg |
| Marlin 5 | Suntour XCT 30, 100 mm, lockout | Shimano CUES 1x9 | 29 x 2.40 in (inner tube) | 15.10 kg |
| Marlin 6 | RockShox Judy, 100 mm | Shimano CUES 1x10 + dropper post | Tubeless Ready rims | 15.00 kg |
| Marlin 7 | RockShox Judy Silver air, 100 mm | SRAM NX Eagle 1x12 + dropper post | Maxxis Rekon Tubeless Ready | 14.15 kg |
Our take: the Marlin 6 offers the best balance of spec and use for anyone already riding trails. The Marlin 7 brings an adjustable air fork and 12 speeds, if you want to go further.

LVR sizing advice The dropper post travel follows frame size: 100 mm in XS and S, up to 170 mm in XXL. If you are between two sizes, the smaller one leaves more room to move around on the bike when descending.

| Is the 11-48 cassette useful? | Yes, it makes long dirt climbs much easier. |
| Can the fork be adjusted? | The spring preload can be set to your weight; we do it when we hand the bike over. |
| For a 40 km organised ride? | Yes, that is well within its capabilities with a bit of training. |
| Is this red the same as Fury red? | No, Lava is deeper and darker than the Fury red of the Marlin 5. |
|
The LVR Cycles verdict A Marlin built for the trail, with very low gearing and a dropper post for relaxed descending. Its deep lava red gives it a strong character.
