Trek Procaliber 9.6 Crystal White: a carbon hardtail that loves to descend

The Trek Procaliber 9.6 Gen 3 combines the OCLV Mountain carbon frame with IsoBow, a 130 mm Fox Factory 34 fork with GRIP2 cartridge and Kashima coating, and a SRAM Eagle 70 T-Type 1x12 drivetrain. Trek quotes 12.38 kg in size M. Its Crystal White is a bright, crystalline white that shows off the lines of the frame.

Who is it for?

For the mountain biker who rides a hardtail for its liveliness but does not want to back off on descents: technical trails, rocky steps and tight switchbacks. It suits an XC racer as well as a "downcountry" rider who puts fun first.

The LVR workshop view

OCLV Mountain and IsoBow, the carbon Procaliber's double act. Trek builds this frame from its OCLV carbon, whose layers are heat-pressed to drive out air trapped between the fibres; the Mountain version prioritises resistance to rock strikes and crashes, and remains covered by Trek's lifetime warranty. The IsoBow design routes the seatstays over the seat tube to form an arch that flexes vertically: the rear of the hardtail filters vibration better, with no pivots or wearing parts.

In short: the 9.6 is the most descent-oriented carbon Procaliber. Its Fox Factory 34 offers 130 mm, 10 more than the other models, with the GRIP2 cartridge and Kashima coating; with the SRAM Eagle 70 drivetrain, it weighs 12.38 kg in M.

The GRIP2 cartridge separates compression and rebound adjustment into high and low speed: you can keep the fork firm when accelerating while still letting big hits through. The Kashima coating on the stanchions reduces friction, improving sensitivity over small bumps.

The 130 mm of travel, 10 more than the other Procalibers, leaves a welcome margin on the committing descents around Lodève or in the Montagne Noire. The flip side is a slightly higher front end: we check your position and cockpit height with you.

Which Procaliber should you choose?

Supercaliber SL 9.6 (full suspension)OCLV MountainSRAM Eagle 70 T-Type 1x1280 mm rear / 110 mm front12.93 kg

Our take: the 9.6 sits between the more understated 9.5 and the wireless 9.7 at 11.38 kg. Compared with the full-suspension Supercaliber SL 9.6 (12.93 kg), it is 550 g lighter but has no rear shock.

LVR sizing advice

If you are between two sizes, choose the smaller for a bike that is agile in switchbacks, the larger for stability on fast descents. The cranks go from 170 to 175 mm in L and XL, and the stem from 50 to 80 mm from S to XL.

Your questions

Is 130 mm too much for XC?No, it remains reasonable; the GRIP2 cartridge lets you firm up the fork on climbs.
What difference does Kashima make?Less friction on the stanchions, so a more sensitive fork.
Is the white delicate? It needs regular cleaning; a protective film can be applied in the workshop.
Which cassette?A 12-speed SRAM Eagle XS-1270 10-52, with a 32-tooth chainring.

The LVR Cycles verdict

The most playful Procaliber on descents, thanks to a 130 mm Fox Factory fork that is rare on an XC hardtail. Its crystal white gives it a bright, polished look.

Pros
+ Fox Factory 34 GRIP2 Kashima
+ 130 mm of travel
+ Bright white
Cons
- White needs frequent cleaning
- Kovee Comp wheels heavier than on the 9.7

Why buy from LVR Cycles? In Béziers, we set up the GRIP2 cartridge of your Fox Factory with you, apply a protective film and service the fork.
