Trek Procaliber 8 Red Serpentine: the T-Type drivetrain on an alloy frame

Who is it for?

For the mountain biker who rides a lot, in all weathers, and wants a robust drivetrain that can take knocks against rocks and gear changes mid-climb. It will also appeal to riders who want to try XC racing on a durable bike, from S to XL.

The LVR workshop view

Alpha Platinum: a refined aluminium. In Trek's hierarchy of alloys, Platinum sits above the Alpha Silver of the Marlins and below the Alpha NEXT Platinum reserved for the latest-generation Fuels. The Procaliber 8 shares this frame with the Procaliber 6: cables routed through the tubes, a creak-free 73 mm BSA threaded bottom bracket, hidden kickstand and rack mounts, and a UDH universal derailleur hanger. Trek also says it now makes almost all of its aluminium frames from low-carbon metal.

What it meansXC geometry, solid frame, controlled budgetVersatile for leisure rides and tracks, heavierLighter, more compliant rear end

Put simply: on this Procaliber 8, Trek replaces the Shimano groupset with a SRAM Eagle 70 T-Type, with a 10-52 cassette and a derailleur that mounts on the UDH standard. The claimed weight rises to 13.73 kg in M; here you choose a modern, robust drivetrain rather than a featherweight bike.

The T-Type derailleur mounts directly on the wheel axle thanks to the UDH standard: there is no longer a fragile hanger between the two, nor any limit screws to adjust. After a ride through the scree of the Espinouse, shifting stays crisp, even under heavy load.

The 10-52 cassette paired with the 32-tooth chainring gives a wider range than a 10-51: a little more speed on fast track descents and something in reserve for the steep ramps. The threaded BSA SRAM DUB bottom bracket makes maintenance easier, which we handle in our workshop.

Which Procaliber should you choose?

Procaliber 9.6OCLV Mountain, IsoBowSRAM Eagle 70 T-Type 1x12Fox Factory 34, 130 mm12.38 kg

Our take: the Shimano XT/SLX version of the Procaliber 8 weighs 12.78 kg, 950 g less than this Eagle 70 build; the choice comes down to lightness versus drivetrain robustness. The carbon 9.6 keeps the Eagle 70 for 12.38 kg.

LVR sizing advice

If you are unsure, the smaller size favours agility on twisty trails, the larger one stability at high speed. The handlebar goes from 720 to 750 mm from ML upwards, the stem lengthens from 50 to 80 mm and the dropper post reaches 170 mm in XL.
