For the 3 or 4 year old setting off to discover cycling in the yard, the garden or along park paths, and for the parent who wants to walk alongside. It also suits a shy child, who gains confidence thanks to a hand resting on the handle.
An Alpha Silver frame for the very first pedal strokes. Trek makes this Precaliber 12 from Alpha Silver aluminium, an alloy from its Alpha family that is also found on adult mountain bikes. It is paired with a steel fork, alloy rims and a coaster brake rear hub: few parts, few adjustments, and a bike that forgives early clumsiness.
| Precaliber 12 | Precaliber 16 | Precaliber 20 7-speed | |
| Stage | Discovering pedalling | First hand brakes | First gears |
| Frame / fork | Alpha Silver alloy / steel | Alloy / steel | Alpha Silver alloy / 35 mm fork |
| Reference bike | 6.80 kg, 86 to 102 cm | 8.35 kg, 99 to 117 cm | 10.90 kg, 114 to 132 cm |
| What it means | Brakes by pedalling backwards | Learns to use brake levers | Learns to change gear |
In other words: 6.80 kg, a single gear, braking controlled by pedalling backwards and stabilisers that go on or come off in an instant. Your child only has one thing to learn at a time.
The 2.25-inch tyres are wide for a 12-inch bike: they put more rubber on the ground and better absorb the small bumps of a dirt path. For your child, that means a more stable, less twitchy bike on which they dare to pedal further.
The low frame means your child can step over the bike without lifting their leg high, and the 50 mm stem keeps the handlebar close to the body. Your child stays nicely upright, which makes those first turns easier. Over the months, we raise the saddle to keep up with their growth, until it is time to move up to the 16-inch.
| Model | Wheels | Child's height | Gears / brakes | Weight |
| Precaliber 12 | 12 in | 86 to 102 cm | 1 speed, coaster brake | 6.80 kg |
| Precaliber 16 | 16 in | 99 to 117 cm | 1 speed, 2 V-brakes | 8.35 kg |
| Precaliber 20 Freewheel | 20 in | 114 to 132 cm | 1 speed, 2 V-brakes | 9.45 kg |
| Precaliber 20 7-speed | 20 in | 114 to 132 cm | 7 speeds, 2 V-brakes, 35 mm fork | 10.90 kg |
Our take: in Pink Frosting as in Fjord Blue, the Precaliber 12 weighs 6.80 kg. Compared with the Precaliber 16 (99 to 117 cm), it keeps the advantage for the smallest children, from 86 cm.
