Trek Precaliber 16 Pink Frosting: bigger wheels to go further

The Trek Precaliber 16 in Pink Frosting, a soft icing pink, moves up to 16-inch wheels fitted with 2.25-inch Bontrager XR1 tyres. Your child rides further and more easily than on a 12-inch, brakes with two levers on the handlebar and keeps the stabilisers for as long as needed. It weighs 8.35 kg according to Trek, for a height of 99 to 117 cm.

Who is it for?

For the 4 or 5 year old who already follows their parents on foot and now wants to follow them by bike, on cycle lanes or in big parks. It also suits a child who has grown quickly and feels cramped on their 12-inch.

The LVR workshop view

An alloy frame built for the age of first hand brakes. The Precaliber 16 is based on a kids' aluminium alloy frame and a steel fork. Its real distinguishing feature lies elsewhere: it drops the coaster brake of the 12-inch for two linear-pull brakes, operated by levers on the handlebar just like an adult bike. Your child thus learns the movement they will keep for their whole cycling life.

In other words: 8.35 kg, a single freewheel gear, two hand brakes and stabilisers that fit without tools. Trek designs it for 4 and 5 year olds.

16-inch wheels roll over small steps, roots and pavement joints more easily than a 12-inch. With 28 spokes and alloy rims, they stay strong against the kerb hops children love.

The 89 mm chainset and 26-tooth chainring give an easy gear: your child sets off without straining and rides at a pace parents can follow at a brisk walk. For a first family outing, the path along the Canal du Midi offers flat, car-free terrain.

Our take: the Precaliber 16 sits between the 12-inch (6.80 kg) and the 20 Freewheel (9.45 kg): 8.35 kg for 99 to 117 cm. This icing pink is technically identical to the three other colours.

LVR sizing advice

Trek recommends the Precaliber 16 from 99 to 117 cm, for 4 and 5 year olds. When seated, your child should be able to put their feet on the ground and reach the brake levers without stretching their arms. Drop into our Béziers shop with them: a test ride settles the question in a few minutes.

Your questions

Can we go out on a ride?Yes, on flat ground; plan for breaks, as a single gear is quickly tiring on hills.
Are the wheels strong?Yes, alloy rims with 28 spokes, made to take small knocks.
Is a helmet needed?Yes, on every ride, adjusted to their head size.
Is this pink light?Yes, a soft, pale icing pink.

The LVR Cycles verdict

A Precaliber 16 that builds momentum, with its bigger wheels and hand brakes. Its pale icing pink stays soft and cheerful.

Pros
+ Faster-rolling 16-inch wheels
+ Wide 2.25-inch tyres
+ Soft pastel pink
Cons
- Single speed on hills
- No kickstand

Why buy from LVR Cycles? Our Béziers workshop checks the wheels, brakes and bolts, sets the saddle for your child and raises it over the months.
