Classed by LOOK in the "gravel all-around" category, the X-Track Race Carbon is equally at home on a cross-country mountain bike or in cyclo-cross. Its carbon body widens the contact area to 515 mm², its open dual-sided mechanism lets mud escape, and its two sealed bearings, backed up by a labyrinth seal, protect the Chromoly+ axle from spray. LOOK claims more than 15 tests beyond the ISO standard: fatigue, impact, UV and salt spray.
The aluminium X-Track shares the Race Carbon's mechanism and sealing, but its narrower platform (57 mm) gives the sole less support. The Race Carbon therefore offers more comfort on long rides, for less weight. To go further, the Race Carbon Ti replaces the Chromoly+ axle with titanium and saves around thirty grams per pedal. Riders who want an even wider platform should look at the X-One-G, though they'll give up the dual-sided entry.
This is the pedal we readily recommend to riders who split their time between gravel and MTB: one pair of shoes, one type of cleat for both bikes. Our tip: trace the outline of your cleat on the sole with a marker before replacing it, and you'll find your position again in a minute. An X-Track cleat wears faster if you often walk on tarmac; check it at the start of every season.
