With the Trail Grip, LOOK has taken the flat pedal in the opposite direction: rather than metal pins, the platform features LOOK Activ Grip by Vibram inserts in vulcanised rubber, dotted with composite studs. The result: positive grip with trainers, hiking boots or flat MTB shoes, and no risk of gashing your shin when your foot slips. It's the pedal we recommend to e-bike, hybrid or leisure gravel riders who want to leave the road for their first singletrack without investing in specific shoes.
Both are composite flats, but they're not aimed at the same rider. The Trail Fusion relies on 8 replaceable metal pins per side and an 18 mm profile: it's a pedal for committed mountain biking, on trail or enduro, to be paired with a soft-rubber MTB sole. The Trail Grip, heavier (530 g versus around 320 g per pair), puts comfort and safety first: no aggressive spikes, and a rubber that forgives slips and spares your soles. On leisure rides, on an e-bike or when touring, it's more pleasant day to day. And if you're weighing it up against the Geo City Grip, they share the same base: only the inserts differ.
Lightly grease the threads before fitting, then tighten with an 8 mm Allen key to the 25 Nm torque recommended by LOOK; remember that the left pedal is reverse-threaded. The inserts are wear parts: when the studs become rounded, a set of Activ Grip Trail inserts is all you need to restore day-one grip, or to change colour. Ride mostly in town? Go for the City inserts, which are gentler on everyday shoes.
